How in the WORLD can ANYONE put the Pomona colleges in the top 5? Or even the top 10??? And leave out the lesser San Diego's, Loyola, Biola, PEPPERDINE for crying out loud, University of the Pacific, University of Sanfrancisco, EVERY UC and the larger Cal States (Long Beach and Fullerton)

Are you kidding me!? Just look at the stats people.

isn't univ. of san diego ranked higher than UCSC USR, USM AND UCI? their average sat's and gpa's are much higher than the above or are you doing just state schools?

I am only ranking National Universities as they automatically qualify in status over liberal arts colleges, regardless of prestige and notoriety.

If I missed one, let me know and I will change it.

Biola is, in my opinion, clearly the most underrated university in the state. The scores for both GPA and SAT's as well as student to faculty ratio are higher than most of the schools listed above it - until you get to the UC's.

I'm trying not to be biased, but I just don't see how you can put caltech ahead of Berkeley. I can see putting stanford ahead, but berkeley is so much more well rounded than caltech. If we were talking aboout certain fields, sure, caltech is probably better, but the fact that Berkeley offers so, so much more in the way of fields of study, it just seems like it has to be a "better" university as a whole. If you wanted to study art history, english, business, poli sci, history, comp. lit, languages, or countless other majors that caltech doesn't even offer, where are you better served, berkeley or caltech?

Gentleman - your point about Cal Tech and Berkeley is very valid:

I suppose the difference is that whenever they do the same things, Cal Tech USUALLY comes out on top. However, in terms of reputation and a more complete University, Berkeley does in. I was very torn in ranking the two, but the slightly more universally impressive stats of the Cal Tech students finally swayed my opinion.

By the way, people that keep putting these liberal arts college like Harvey Mudd over schools like USC and UCLA have got to be out of their damn mind. Schools like SDSU and Cal Poly are NOT in the same league as any of the top 10 schools. THey are not even in the same discussion. Has anyone looked at the stats for their students? Hell, you can transfer to Cal Poly from a JC with a 2.0 GPA.

Poly belongs UNDER Biola, SDSU etc. as do all the cal state schools. Matter of fact, ANY cal state school should be automatically ranked under ANY UC school.

Why shouldn't Pomona be in the top 5?

Phear_me--I hear what you're saying, but I just think that if, say, 20% of the programs that caltech and berkeley share favor caltech, it still leaves 80% that favor berkeley. If anything, caltech ranked #2 should have an * next to it that says caltech is better for certain majors. If you are more humanites driven, caltech probably wont make the top ten, and there are a lot of humanities students out there.

I understand GentlemanandScholar and as I said, it was a difficult decision in my own personal ranking:

Lewis - if you really don't understand why Pomona doesn't belong in the TOP 15, let alone the TOP 5, then I'm willing to bet you're a student there.

:)

There's no reason why it should be far from Harvey Mudd.
