Thanks everyone! After installing and uninstalling about 8 different things I managed to get Eclipse to work! I couldn’t of done it without you, and this showed me just how useful this study group can be Now on to Karel lol.

Sorry for double posting everyone but I came to another problem T~T

I’m reading the handout on how to use Karel with Eclipse but I can’t get it to work. I downloaded the file for assignment 1 and I unzipped it. However, the handout tells me to “Click on this button and then use the Browse
option to find the Assignment-1 or Assignment1 folder. When you do so, Eclipse will
load the starter project and display its name in the Package Explorer window like this:”. Sadly, this is not the case for me :[ When I click on the import project button a pop up titled import project shows up and it says “Select a directory to search for existing Eclipse projects.”. The handout tells me to use the browse option, but I have two, one for “Select root directory”" and one for “Select archive file:”. Nothing resembling a package explorer shows up and when I click on Assignment1 while in one of the browse options I don’t have a default option in it, just .git and worlds options. Does anyone know what I’m doing wrong? It’s probably something really stupid but it has rendered me useless thus far…

School hasn’t started here yet, but I’m down for self-studying some Comp Sci. since it’s the foundation of my prospective major, Computer Engineering, I’ll be using this to get a head start. MIT OpenCourseWave has some really great material though. So is Barron’s the best for self-studying AP Comp. Sci. A?

Is MIT OpenCourseWare for Java? I thought it was for python last time I checked it out.

@Brightprospects, I’m pretty sure pentupenguin is right about MIT being python, but if you’re interested in a career involving programming, then learning any language is beneficial. And if you master Barron’s, you’ll be set for the AP test. However, it’s INCREDIBLY dry and rough to get through. I’ve had to re-read the first chapter like 3 times and I still don’t understand everything in it. As I’ve mentioned before, Stanford is the way to go.

@pentupenguin, I don’t have Eclipse on this computer so I’ll have to confirm this later, but I’m pretty sure you use the top little browsing thing (the root-directory, I believe). Select the entire “Assignment 1” folder and hit “use” or “upload” or whatever. It should show up as a drop-down menu in the left panel of Eclipse. Let me know if this helps, and if it didn’t, I’ll get my other computer set up to help you.

I really want someone to work at my pace! I’m on assignment two, and I’m pretty sure no one has even finished Karel. Maybe 7Steps?

ALSO! I wish we were just a little bit more advanced, cause this would be exciting news: <a href=“You've requested a page that no longer exists | Stanford News”>You've requested a page that no longer exists | Stanford News;

^^great post. What lecture are you on? I’m on the 3rd(sorry I’m going slow. Just came back from VaCa).

Thanks. I’m on lecture 6, but I’ve watched each lecture at least twice to really absorb the material. Have you been working on the assignments? Let me know when you’re finished with assignment 1 so we can exchange/review answers.

@Aboveblues I’m going to check out Stanford’s site, but now I just have to buy Barron’s CSA book and I’m set. thanks!!

Sent from my SGH-I897 using CC App

aboveblues, I was getting so excited about the free AI course a few weeks ago until I realized I needed to have learned linear algebra I just got back from a week-long vacation and I’m about to go on another one, so I haven’t done much lately, but I think I’m on lecture 7 and done with the most of assignment two.

@Brightprospects- I’m excited! And just so you know, lectures 1-7 is roughly equal to chapter 1 of Barron’s, except for much easier to understand. Barron’s is most useful for the practice tests.

@BK- I wanted to do the machine learning one but it says you need to be proficient in at least one programming language :[ and I might try to follow along with the data structures class if I have enough time. We’re at about the same spot, I’ve watched through lecture 8 and done two of the problems for assignment two. Do you have computer access while on vacation? I think I’m gonna try to finish up through assignment 3 by the time school starts for me (this Wednesday.)

yup, Stanford lectures really hammer the basics down so that the harder stuff is easy.

btw, I’m slightly (ONLY slightly) experienced in the Java field, and after breaking down every AP test question in Barron’s diagnostic + sample questions, I strongly suggest each of us to pay extra close attention to the Array’s lecture (#16-18).

I’m not sure whether we’re supposed to know multi dimensional arrays for the AP subset though.

Good luck to everyone, starting lecture #7 right now.

^Yes, you do need to know 2D arrays. They were the subject of the last FRQ on the 2011 exam. (The question I didn’t finish, as a matter of fact…) Definitely don’t ignore them.

Hey, I’m working in Dr. Java at home for the first time and for some reason I can’t save files (and as a result I can’t compile and run programs.) My code is fine since I’m running basically just the skeleton, so what’s my problem?

Also, whenever I access the GridWorld case study page on College Board to download the code, my browser closes from some error. Why is this happening to me :(?

Nevermind, I got it working.

On a side note, I know this is a thread for APCS, but I noticed that we’re only learning Java basically. What are some good sites/forums for learning about computers in general, operating systems, various software, i.e becoming a total computer nerd? Haha I know this sounds weird but I’m just curious.

So I finished Lecture 1-4, and I have done Assignment 1, but during Lecture 4 he starts doing Graphics Programs. I want to practice with this a little bit before moving on, but I don’t know what to do to create a different program in eclipse. For the assignment I just used what the Assignment gave me to begin with. How do I start a new program? There are options to create Classes and Files and a bunch of other things, but I don’t know which one to use. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

aboveblues: I just got back from vacation (no computer access :/) and I’ll probably be busy until school starts, but I’d like to at least get through lecture 10 and assignment 3 by then (September 7). I’ll just accept that I can’t do any of the Stanford courses and focus on other things.

connorm333: Why would you need to start a new project? Couldn’t you just start it like you are supposed to and just fill in the body with whatever code you want?

school just started for me, and I’m already swamped with work :[ I really hope I can continue to do this at a good pace.

and yes, you should just use one of the stanford projects, use the correct import(s) etc., and create your program then.

Has anyone completed the “Find Range” code?

Yes that would work for the meantime, but I would like to know how to start a project from scratch, because I feel that would be an important thing to know if I ever had to program without some sort of template to use first.

This thread needs a BUMPPPP. Soooooooo…how far is everyone? I’m on lecture 4 -.-
