So how many people actually answer the optional statement? And does it help with admission?
@mahkcots How are you able to manage ROTC along with playing lacrosse at MIT? Im also pretty sire ROTC is not a hook? Can anyone confirm me on this?
ROTC/JROTC is not a hook.
Hi, I applied EA as well (International applicant). I feel that I have a better than non-existent chance of an acceptance.
I talked to the coach and he said that he has had several guys go through ROTC and play lacrosse at the same time. I didn’t figure it would be a hook, but maybe something that stands out in some way because from what I’ve seen it’s not very common. It’s obviously not the focal point of my application or all I am relying on though.
IF MIT thinks you’re qualified, anything would help you get in. If you’re not than well… yeah, nothing can help you.
Less than .1% chance of admission, but a girl can dream. SAT score was pretty meh (2050) even though my subsection scores are all in the 99th percentile for my school.
But stats, nonetheless:
Applied EA–Physics major
GPA: 102/100W 3.86/4.0UW
Rank: 12/823
SAT: 2050 (CR: 700 [umm…how. I suck at reading comprehension], M: 680 [careless mistakes], W: 670)
SAT Subject: Taking tomorrow
ACT: Took in October
AP: WH-3, USH-3, English Lang-4, Spanish Lit-4, Spanish Lang-5 Pending: Calc BC, Macroeconomics, Gov, English Lit, Physics 2, Chem, Bio.
Senior courseload:
-AP Calculus BC
-AP US Gov (1st)/AP Macroeconomics(2nd)
-AP Statistics (1st–have to get out next semester because of scheduling conflicts with AP Macro and economics is a grad requirement)/TA for college counseling office (2nd) (I get to help kids fill out their college apps and scholarship/financial aid stuff)
-AP Physics 2
-AP Chemistry
-AP Biology
-Computer Maintenance
No science/math competitions exist over here…I hadn’t even seen the names USAMO/AIME/SciOly or whatever others before creating a CC account. Still not exactly sure what they are.
ECs/Clubs:
NHS member
Spanish Club President
Physics tutor (man, I love doing it. Physics is fun.)
Unpaid babysitting
Senior class treasurer
Interview: 2 hours long. It was nice. I feel like I bugged my EC too much towards the deadline, though. I emailed him once and then called the night the app was due since he hadn’t submitted yet. I hope that didn’t annoy him.
Recs: AP English Lang teacher (she loves me so I hope it was good. I was one of the few that even passed the AP English Language exam) and AP Physics 1/2 teacher (I lettered in physics last year as the best female student in AP Physics, nominated by him, so also hoping that one is good.)
Essays: I wrote about LEGOs and struggling to find a path to a post-secondary education based off my background.
Good luck to you all! I know my chances are very slim if not nonexistent, but still a hopeful.
Do you think that MIT will send nudes as acceptance letters to international students too?
…what??
You mean “tubes?”
I did EA.
Have a few good awards like Siemens semifinalist and USAMO. My test scores are fine, but my grades are pretty bad. Got a few Bs, may end up getting around 5Bs total including senior semester.
I had like 8 B’s before senior year. (1. I just don’t understand literature, expositiory writing is like my highest grade this year though. 2. I tend to protest to teachers against homework that’s just purely work, so lol) (Although I’m expecting straight A’s for senior year, given how I managed to have all 95%'s without studying for a single test, and barely doing any homework outside of school this year.) You should be fine.
Anyways, did anyone manage to confirm the oft-cited statistic that about 80% of USAMO people make MIT every year?
@XoXdreamerXoX
I assume your economic circumstances aren’t really ideal? That will help you application significantly if and only if you showed a strong passion for physics.
You have a reasonable chance, but your application will probably (?, I’m not sure how they do this exactly) be largely dependent on your essays (I think, based on what they said on the blog, it seem reasonable). Hope they’re well-received!
Btw, have you ever tried self-studying stuff online? It’s easier than it looks, and it’s really fun.
@qwerytiop Before this year, no. My father took on another job, so now we’re doing okay. I really hope my essays were good enough. Either way it goes, at least I’ll know I tried.
Anybody else notice a change in the MyMIT thingy mabob? It seems as if the interview information has been replaced by financial aid st00f.
@Newdle …I just went to check and woah.
Also, my testing requirement was checked off when I took the November test and results haven’t been posted yet. The weird part is that I signed up for USH, Physics, and Math 2, but changed my mind last minute while in the testing room and took Math 1, Math 2, and Physics instead and what’s showing up on MyMIT is Math 1, Math 2, and Physics. Does that mean they received the scores or something since my testing requirement is checked off and the dates (11/2015) by my subject test scores are there or what?
(*Note: on my app, I stated I was taking Math 2 and Physics. I never told them I’d take Math 1)
@Newdle @XoXodreamerXo - what does the financial aid stuff say in your MyMIT? The interview info is still there but there seems to be a new financial aid section which I’ve never noticed before.
I wonder if this addition is true for all EA applicants?
Financial Aid information has transitioned over to the MIT Online Financial Aid System. Please access the system through WebSIS or by visiting
Your MIT Kerberos ID is required for access.
what is the Kerberos ID please?
I don’t know…just copying what they have lol.
