Let's talk about admissions essays!

I know people don't like to talk about their essays for fear of intellectual theft, but I was wondering if anyone else was planning to write their essay about something completely unrelated to art?

I know some schools require it to be about art, so I will probably write multiple essays. But I intend to write about my contributions to my community and my last university and show them what sets me apart from other art students who are equally passionate about art as I am.

In a short blurb, what are you planning to write about? (I.E. "my favorite artist and how he inspired me to try something new" ect ect)

i wrote about sitting in my car doing nothing - but tied that back to what kind of art i want to create (it made sense... to me at least)

My D wrote about learning how to deal with peer criticism in art classes (which she experienced for the 1st time during RISD pre-college). One school asked her to write another relating more to her high school experience. I don't remember what she wrote about, but it was a school she wasn't that interested in so she threw something together in about 20 minutes and sent it off. A week later they offered her a scholarship so go figure!

Whatever your son/daughter writes, just be certain to check the spelling and grammar carefully. As I stated in another post, when recommending a student for admission (transfer and graduate) the Admission Essay was probably the last thing I looked at, and I don't think it ever changed the decision one way or another...except perhaps if it was unintelligible.

I wrote about art in relation to critical thinking strategies, the disparity in intellectualism between predominantly left and predominantly right brained individuals and my vision in relating art, medicine and research. I added a bit of dialogue and a lot of writing style in addition to scholarly tone to hopefully finger crossed stick out a teeny bit.

^___^ we'll seeee! if anyone wants to compare essays pm me. I think mine may have been a bit off for strictly art schools, but I hooppee it'll work, again, fingers crossed, for universities

I wrote about all of my self doubt and how I eventually came to the decision to apply to art school. I used my problems to convey the best sides of my personality. It sounds bad if you blatantly say you are introspective, but if you write an entire essay showing how introspective you are it's better.
