Letter from the USAFA? confused!

Hi everyone. I received my summer seminar acceptance package from the USAFA last week. Today, however, I received a thin letter from the director of selections that states:

“Congratulations! We have received your application and believe you have the potential for admission. Although your overall record is not currently competitive, we think, with a continued effort, you may be able to compete for an appointment…”

I’m a little nervous here :frowning: When is an applicant considered “competitive”? Thanks!!

Dont worry about that. you just need to make sure you finish your application early and submit those test scores as often as you keep improving. Good Luck to you

the application is "competitive" generally when your test scores are around the average, and the other prerequisites you put on the precandidate questionaire are up to par.. so keep takin those tests and sending them in! that can be changed very quickly

thanks! when I went to check my app. status online, it said I was "Competitive". Still a bit confused, but I am taking to ACT this Saturday so hopefully i'll do well

well hmm i see why you're confused now... that's really weird. sometimes the online app takes a few days/weeks to update.. but either way. take the act and do well, and if you don't do so hot, take the act! remember they take the best of either, and the best of all your subscores. so take it often and do well! you'll have no problems

i think HNeedle meant to say take the SAT then ACT :)

oh no no no absolutely not! the ACT by far :)

ANYWAYS! haha..take em both!

ALL IT MEANS IS KEEP PLUGGING AND CHUGGING AWAY :)

Read through the threads here and United States of America Service Academy Forums - Powered by vBulletin
to see the stats.

Also be honest with yourself, if you see a shortfall fix it, if you have a medical issue address it now (DODMERB will find it)

Be proactive and contact your ALO, download your MOC's request for nom.

Most importantly ask yourself if this is the life you want...I am also speaking about your commitment to serve. PLEASE DON'T SAY I ALWAYS WANTED TO FLY FIGHTERS...DH DOES, BUT IT IS A HARD FIGHT TO GET THERE...YOU SHOULD SAY I WANT TO BE AN AF OFFICER!

If you want to serve also start the ROTC route, you may decide that this maybe a better fit for you.

Good luck..and always remember ABOVE ALL...still not sure if that is better then AIM HIGH

It probably means you are on the low side of competitive...so keep dong your best.

I don't know B&P, I tend to miss when I aim high. ;)
(But I do prefer it to "above all")

Well Raimius, as long as you have a shack when you need to that is all that matters...I guess that is what the AF means it when they say ABOVE ALL

shack? I'm not familiar with that one...?

"Shack" is pilot-speak for a direct hit on a target with a bomb or missile.

Ah...I can't believe I've never heard that before!
(feeling slightly less knowledgeable than a minute ago)

In response to the thread Q:

Ya, I just made a thread about probably the same kind of letter you got, but they got my scores all wrong and think I'm better than I am on ACT math. Try checking their website to see if they listed your scores lower than you scored.

d29061,

I got the same little letter from USAFA after being picked up for SS.

... and I recieved (surprisingly) an EARLY appointment to USAFA.

Just make sure your admissions file is correctly finished way before deadlines; take the SAT & ACT alot... even if you think your scores are good enough.
