Letter fron Chancellor

Or maybe just fewer are accepting.

I have posted this before, but keep in mind that things may be changing at Pitt because of the new Honors College dean. The founding Dean Alec Stewart died in April of 2010. An interim dean was named for the 2010-2011 school year, and a new dean was named before the 2011-2012 school year. The new dean probably did not make great changes for this fall’s incoming class, but there may be big changes for the current applicant group. No one really knows. Best wishes to those who are waiting. My daughter will graduate in April and her full tuition scholarship has allowed her to explore lots of things.

I do believe he received the Chancellor letter. I can’t be 100% sure since we did not save it but I think that must be the one. He received it 2 to 3 weeks before receiving the scholarship letter.
For anyone that is still waiting, I know how hard it is…I went through this waiting with my daughter who received a $10,000 a yr award in 2010. So I would not give up hope as it is very early in the game for Pitt. I think these awards will go on for at least another month if not more. For my daughter I did ask for her to be reviewed but I probably waited until December. They only started reviewing for scholarships this month. I remember looking at last years Pitt threads on CC and some high scoring applicants received scholarship notice after December.
Congratulations to all who have been notified and Good Luck to those still waiting.

Yes, I did receive an invitation to apply for Chancellors.

Forgot to add that daughter received her $10,000 a yr scholarship in March of 2010. Long long wait…

Full tuition and Chancellor’s Invite!!! Doing happy dance! It was dated 11/13 and postmarked 11/14. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

MommyDearest13: Doing the happy dance for you!!! Time to write some more essays!!! LOL!!

FYI for people counting scholarship numbers, a $10 million endowed scholarship fund has been set up (about $6 million raised thus far) that will fund new merit-based scholarships called Nordenberg Scholars. Likely this will go into effect next fall, but I’d imagine it will fund up to 10 Chancellor Scholarship-type full rides…or be divided and used to fund a larger number of smaller awards.

Dd received 12k and invite to compete for Chancellor’s - it’s called “Chancellor’s Nominee Scholarship”, she’s a bit disappointed actually, was hoping for full tuition. Letter dated 11/13 received today and you have 3 wks from invite letter date to complete 4 essays and get two rec’s. Not sure if these rec’s have to be additional to the 2 she sent in with her app? For those wanting timeline - applied 9/17, accepted 9/29 with UHC, invited to apply for guaranteed medical school last wk also.

I remember that the Chancelor’s application four years ago was a big pain in the bottom at a time when DD did not need another one. For us, the full tuition made it very affordable, so the application did not get much attention.

They are separate recs from the application- those recs were looked at by the admissions committee. These recs (Chancellor’s recs) will be looked at by UHC staff. I asked the same teachers who wrote my regular recs to write my Chancellor’s ones too. I believe they might get different instructions on what to comment on, but I’m not sure.

Thanks Awesome. I’m not sure if these teachers will add anything to their existing letter so it might just duplicate if UHC gets her whole admissions file.

11/19 Full Tution + Chancellor’s Scholarship nomination w/ invitation to apply
11/15 GAP - Medicine selection w/ Invitation to apply
11/05 CAS/Pre-Med Acceptance with UHC
OOS Application complete - last week of October.

Only wish all the other college admisisons prcoesses are as simple, quick, fair, and transparent. We are all extremely happy for DD and very grateful to University of Pittsburgh.

Best wishes to all those waiting for news on Chancellor’s invitation!!
(every year, typically 50-60 nominees are invited for on-campus interviews)

I received a letter yesterday awarding me $5,000 per year and an invitation to apply for the Chancellors Scholarship. I have similar credentials: 2290 SAT and about the same GPA. Top 5% in my class. A little disappointed as well after reading/comparing my stats with others who received a full ride.

Are you an in-state or OOS?

i also got the 5000 per year scholarship in december as well as the chancellors nomination. im in state but also kinda disappointed.

D was accepted to Nursing with no merit award in about two weeks after application. She called and asked them if they reviewed her ECs, resume and recs which arrived separately and they said they would send them on for review, leading her to believe they did not review them yet. Then this week, she received an invitation from the nursing Dean congratulating her on being accepted from more than 1000 apps received each year and advising her of guaranteed MSN, PhD for qualified undergrads, but still no merit. High SATS, tons of leadership ECS, great resume and recs, so we are hoping for some merit as we are OOS. We will see! Best wishes to everyone who had good news! Happy New Year!

I called Pitt and asked what was this year’s criteria for the full tuition scholarship. I believe that I ended up connected with someone high up on the food chain who told me that it was a 1560 (M/CR) on the SAT and top 2% of the class. My ds’s school doesn’t rank but they base it on the applicants from each school so they have a frame of reference. They were very nice about it and now I know how close he came to getting it.

^I am only top 5% and got full tuition, so that can’t be a hard requirement. I did have rather compelling ECs though.

There are always exceptions to the rule. Every year there are students with stats equal or better than those who received the full tuition scholarship who get the lesser scholarship amounts. Then there are students with lower stats who get the full tuition scholarship but they may have a “hook” that Pitt wants so they get the scholarship offer. I know it must be disappointing but I’ve seen this happen year after year :(
