This summer I worked and got close to my boss who went to the school I really want to go to. He said that he would write me an outstanding rec since he knows all of my interests, what department in the school I'd like to apply to, and my strong personality traits. He isn't a teacher though...first off, do you guys think that a letter from a former student would even help or look impressive? Secondly, how do I send in a rec letter from a non-teacher? Thank you very much, everybody!!!

Yes, it is absolutely a good thing to send an additional rec from an employer who knows you and likes you. The fact that he also knows the school is very helpful.

While you don’t want to send zillions of recs, one or perhaps two in addition to the required ones (generally, 2 teachers and a GC) is perfectly fine if the writers really know you from ECs or jobs. You want to make sure that additional recs do not duplicate the others, so getting 2 additional recs from the same EC or job would usually not be a good idea. He can either write the rec and give it to you to mail, or you can supply him with a postage paid, addressed envelope so that he can send it himself. Why don’t you ask him which he would prefer?

Thank you very much for your reply!! His brother, who also graduated from the school I’d like to go, doesnt know me as well; however, I know that he is a much better writer and I know that he got much better grades while he was in college and went to law school (my future goal!!)…but he is not my employer. Would asking such a “random” person not look as good?
Thank you very much once again!!
