Many colleges allow for 1 additional recommendation. I did an unpaid internship this summer. Would it be really beneficial to get a rec from my boss? He really loved my work, thought I was ambitious, hard-working, and just really passionate about the subject. How far would this go with admissions officers? He also graduated from an Ivy League school, if that matters.

If he knows you really well- not only your work but also what you like and do, then you could ask him. It’ll be refreshing for admission officers to read a letter from an employer instead of a teacher once in awhile. However, if he doesn’t know that much about you for him to craft an informative letter, then it’ll just be extraneous material that could harm your chances of getting into a school.

Thanks for the response! Yeah, he does know me pretty well, so it should be good. Does anyone else have any experience with a rec from boss, and how has it helped/hurt your college app in the past?

I would not use it in PLACE of a teacher recommendation if its available. Colleges want to more know your intellectual drive, ability, and character coming out of a classroom instead of a job, if you know what I mean. It would certainly be worth sending but do not replace a teacher rec with it.

It’s not in place of a teacher recommendation. It’s additional to the two teacher recs.
