Letter of rec from elective teacher?

So I'm a junior and I asked my AP stats teacher for my letter of rec today. I'm sure i got a 5 on the AP exam and that he has a good opinion of me. He told me that he would be happy to do it but it might not be the best choice for me because AP stats is an elective at my school and he said that colleges want recs from non elective teachers. I initially thought that colleges put more weight on AP teachers, and was planning to ask my AP gopo teacher whom I had for 2 years, but Gopo is also an elective at my school.

So now I'm not sure what to do.....can someone clarify if colleges don't like recs from elective teachers, even if they're AP teachers?

Any help would be appreciated!!

bump^ anyone?

bump. 30 views and no one? C’MON!

Colleges prefer recs from teachers of your core classes (English, Math, Science, History, and Foreign language). They accept other classes as well, but your first priority should be to get two in the subjects above. After those two, if you really want a rec from your AP Stats teacher as a supplemental recommendation, make sure it doesn’t sound the same as recs from your other teachers…

Yes, they want recommendations from core academic SUBJECTS (including mathematics). AP Stats is a math class, through and through. (It doesn’t matter what your school’s policies are.) You are fine asking him as one of your main recommendations.

Stats is a math class, and government (I assume that’s what gopo is) is a history class, so that would be fine. I think the kind of classes colleges mean when they say non-core would be something like AP Studio Art, or AP Music Theory, or Gym, or possibly AP Computer Science, or something similar. So, go for it.

OK I see. Thanks guys. Any other input would be appreciated

To be honest, it’s fine to have an AP stats teacher write your recommendation. The AP stats teacher at my school wrote a lot of recs for her students. It’s better to have a strong rec from an elective teacher than a not-as-strong rec from a core teacher. As long as it’s a rec from a favorable teacher, it’s absolutely fine. (But you probably wouldn’t want a rec from your gym teacher unless you’re trying to get in with sports or something)
