Letter of Rec.

So I'm a rising junior this year and my counselor is leaving to go to another school, but the thing is each year I have been in High school I have had a new counselor. So this new one will have been my 3rd counselor in 3 years. So, when it comes to getting a letter of rec. from my counselor, will it hurt my chances at colleges if it is not that good, because I have gotten to know the other 2 counselors, and I won't have enough time to get to know the new one.

Not a problem. First, you have a full year to get to know this counselor; letters aren't written until the fall of your senior year.

Second, colleges know that guidance counselors change; all your new one has to do is indicate that he/she has only known you for X & so long. My d had a new guidance counselor for her senior year, who indicated that he was new and met her only three times. The bulk of his recommendation dealt with the rigor of the school and how she stacked up. Her results were fine.

Our school guidance dept has written questions for students and for parents. It's called the "brag sheet" and helps the counselor get a more complete view of the student---I'll bet they even lift phrases for their recs. Does your school do this? It's helpful. I also know that the GC's can talk with teachers to get feel for a students strengths.
Can you ask your new counselor what he/she needs form you to be able to write the rec?
Then, also remember that colleges know that GC's may not know a student very well, it's common in big schools. So, go for teacher recs that show who you are......choose them well and you'll be fine.

thanks a lot...that makes me feel a lot better
