My counselor, who isn't exactly sure about this either, has told me that I will have the same letter of recomendation letters throughout every college that I am applying through Common App; is this true? If the latter is the case, it makes a mess for me as I was planning on having different teachers write letters of recommendation for each of the the college I am applying to (usually only one difference per college). To summarize, my question is can you have different letter of recommendations for each specific college (other than additional/supplemental letters) or will each college I apply to, through common app, will have the same two (most of my colleges require only two letters) letter of recommendation?

I am in the exact same situation… I’d assume you’d be able to choose because I told my counselor that was my intentions and he didn’t put it down. But I tried to apply today and there was no such option on common app .

I am stressed out right now because I plan to apply for Early Action to either Stanford or Princeton. Stanford is ok for now because if all else fails I can send all me letters and possibly all the reports but I don’t know about the other colleges.

You send out the invites then assign which TEs you want for each college. Im not sure why you want to, but you can certianly use a different TE for each school.

Your counselor is a common denominator though…you only have one of those.

Interesting - I want to hear from other people. I think there are two questions here:

1) Can you have different recommenders write recommendations for different schools
2) Can a teacher write a recommendation specific for a school, and then write a different recommendation for a different school.

We were told that if our daughter used the Common App, then her teacher recommendations could NOT be customized. If she wanted to customize the letter, then it would have to be mailed in.

Also, if a teacher was common to multiple schools, then that recommendation from that teacher would be sent to each of the schools that she was “selected” for. No customization.

Do I have this right?

Recomenders are done through email…you enter their email in the common app, send an invite, then assign the TE to the schools you want.

So you could do either 1 or 2 if the TE had multiple emails. That would be a big hassle and push the patience of your TE but you could do it.

I think the better question is …really ? I dont see how this would help you. I can see changing the mix of evaluators…more science and math for tech schools, but an evaluation is something that should be independent of where you are going.
