<p>I have a friend who is an alumni for MIT. How much of an impact does that have on my chances of attending MIT?</p>

<p>I forgot to add… If he/she writes a letter of recommendation, this might help regarding on your relation with him/her(working, teaching etc…). But the letter itself isnt enough to get you in, especially if its written just because you are a friend.</p>
