Letter of Recs - What'd you give your teachers?

Not bribes!

What'd you give them to help them write?

My teacher just said, "Just bring in the forms and all" and since I was really nervous about asking the teacher, I, being a dummy, said, "yeah, of course."

But I have NO IDEA what "the forms" are.

Did you guys just give your teacher the Letter of Rec forms, or include other stuff like your resume, etc.?

This is freaking me out, since I have to hurry to not make the teachers rush until my Nov. 1st deadline!

The two teachers who wrote mine each asked for different things. One just asked for the letter of recommendation forms (the ones on the Common App) and a list of my colleges/deadlines. The other requested those plus a resume. It’s always a good idea to ask if there’s anything else you can give them to help them write a good rec. :)

I did a one page letter that thanks them and tells them what to do (pls watch for email from the common app). it has a table with the name, city and deadline for each school. they’re mostly LACs that my teachers haven’t heard of. it also says why I want to go to an LAC and my major. I enclosed a copy of my transcript with the classes they taught me highlighted and a copy of my EC resume

I have another question as well: Is it just basic manners to give them stamped envelopes for every college you need a letter mailed to?

Unless your counselor will send it along with their rec or the school takes care of teacher recs, yes, give them a stamped and addressed envelope.

If you are using the common app you won’t need any envelopes. It’s all online.

So for common app ALL schools submit rec’s online, correct? My teacher seems to have NO idea how to submit rec. letters online, so I guess I have to look into that…

Yes, for all common app schools the recs can be submitted online. That the preferred method. Once you create a common app account and add schools to it, you will waive your rights to see the recs (or not), then add your teachers and enter their email addresses. You’ll submit them as recommenders for each school on a case by case basis. They’ll then get an email directly from the common app inviting them to recommend you and telling them how to do that. If you want to provide them with a hard copy of the the form that they’ll fill out online you can go to the school forms section of the common app website and print one out. And if they just can’t deal with the online submission they do still have the ability to do a paper recommendation and mail it in. But, it’s not all that difficult to accomplish online and most teachers manage it that way.

So would it be okay if I submitted my entire application online, and have JUST the recommendation letters submitted through mail (paper)? I feel like my teacher would prefer the mailing method…

The common app website says : You can submit your application online even if the teachers or counselors elect to complete hard copy forms. However, if they are electing to submit hard copy forms, you must identify and list them within the required fields on the application prior to being able to submit. You will still be able to submit your application even if your teachers or counselors haven’t completed their forms but their names must be listed within the application. If all of the required names are not listed, you will not be able to submit an application to any school.

If the teacher/counselor elects to opt out of the online forms, they may do so by clicking the link within their first notification email. Please encourage the teachers and counselors to fill out the forms online, however, since the schools prefer to receive this information online.

I have Naviance, so my teachers are submitting theirs through Naviance. But both asked for a SHORT resume, including what I did over the summer.

griffen: Thanks! I hope I can talk my teacher into doing this online…

sara12: My school uses Naviance too, just my teacher has no idea what it is.
