I have a family friend, who I work with a lot and she knows how I am outside of school. She went to yale. And she knows what kind of person I am and stuff, would I be able to get a letter of recommendation from her and send it? I looked it up and I am confused since some websites say you can and some say you can’t.
Strongest LOR is going to be a teacher who had you in class for a core academic such as English or Math, preferably during your Junior year.
Each college will state whether they accept additional references. Find the info on their website. The family friend letter of rec isn’t going to be given as much weight as a teacher rec. Outside letters of rec are usually best if they come from a coach, boss, pastor, music instructor, etc… IOW, someone who knows you in a different context apart from academics. It doesn’t matter that the family friend went to Yale. They don’t care about her, they care about you.
