I’ve heard that colleges tend to prefer one letter in STEM and one in the humanities. Problem is, by far my two best recs come from English and History. I have decent relationships with all STEM teachers but they are generic and bland at best.
Choosing between history and English:
My APUSH teacher is like a friend to me and we joke around and are very close. I did however turn in assignments late often and was lazy (I scored a 5 in the end). (I always participated in classroom discussions I just didn’t do my work at home). She likes me on a personal level however and I talk to her like I talk to my friends. She is a newer and more inexperienced teacher however.
My AP Eng teacher thought I was extremely intelligent and that my essay writing skills were excellent. I participated in class discussions almost everyday (although I did this in APUSH as well). She speaks highly of me, but we have a formal and distant relationship. (Scored 5 also)
For my STEM, I have a math teacher who is lazy and somewhat incompetent but is willing to let me read and comment on the letter (I got a 3 on Calc exam). I have decent but generic relationships with both my physics and chem teachers (scores of 4)
Really troubled on what do for my rec letters. For what it’s worth I’m applying to schools that lean liberal arts and plan to major in the humanities (but this is not set at all). HYP, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Columbia etc. are some of the schools I’ll be applying to (ofc there are other more safe schools as well)
