On the common app for UNC chapel hill, the recommendation section only includes a "teacher" category. I'm wondering, does this only refer to high school teachers, or can other teachers be used as well, such as college professors and music instructors? Ty in advance.

Also, just sort of a paranoid question- I listed my school counselor as a recommender on the common app, on 12/29/13... which is in the middle of break. It says the report hasn't started yet, was this a bad move on my part? She will probably start it next week when classes are back but it probably looks like I waited too long, especially since I submitted a request to my counselor for a rec a few weeks ago (she mentioned that I will need to list her on the common application as a side note in an unrelated email the week before winter break). Ty again...

They are looking for teachers of core subjects. Yes it can be a college professor as long as they have taught you in a core subject. I wouldnt advise using a music teacher unless you already have a couple core teachers on the list.

Don’t worry. Colleges realize teacher recs are out of the student’s control, so they don’t need to be in by the application deadline. As long as the person is listed on your Common App as a recommender, they know one will be arriving and they upload stuff each day. Our private college counselor said it’s best to get the recs in within a couple of weeks of the app. deadline though. And I disagree about the rec needing to be a core teacher. It’s better to have a fantastic letter of rec from any school teacher who has known you for a year than to have a mediocre one from a core teacher. I mean, a Mickey Mouse class like cooking wouldn’t be ideal, but a music teacher should be okay. If the professor has known you for a year, that would be good, but if only for a few months, less ideal.

Ty mitch and soccer. So to clarify, the recommender doesn’t have to be a core teacher, and I’m allowed to list music instructors? I got a good letter from a marketing teacher, and I’m aiming at a major in accounting or finance.

They say on their website they want one rec from a teacher in a core subject, the second is optional: [The First-Year Application | University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill | Office of Undergraduate Admissions](First-Year Application - Undergraduate Admissions) Marketing is not a core subject. You should choose a math/science/social studies/or English or foreign language teacher rather than music for your primary rec. It’s fine to use the marketing rec as the optional second.

I agree. Get a rec from a core teacher (if possible) plus use the marketing teacher rec because of your intended major.

I’m sorry, I was thinking the letter of rec from the music teacher would be a second letter. I do agree with everyone that one needs to be a core class, and according to “niceday”, it’s also stated on their website that it needs to be a core class. This is most likely because core classes are more “academic” than electives so it reflects academic success. Colleges also usually prefer teachers who knew you in 10-12 grades. Remember that classes such as psychology and sociology are also core classes. Yes, a marketing teacher as a second rec would be better due to your major.

I appreciate the input everyone. How the heck did I miss that, would it be too late to still ask for a recommendation, then, or did I mess up majorly? My history teacher knows me pretty well but asking her so close to the deadline is probably really bad. If I should still try, we get back from break on monday- should I ask her on that day, or would it be better to do it on a later day of the week like tuesday?
