I know that there's a pinned topic, but I read through a few pages (don't have the time to come through all 700+ posts) and I didn't find my question addressed.

How many letters of rec is too much? I'm thinking of gettting a junior year calc teacher, freshmen year chem teacher, EC supervisor, and possibly a fourth.

Edit: Would it be bad to ask them if they are willing to write one over email? Would a handwritten letter be OK, or should I wait until the school year starts and ask them in person?

I think asking in person is probably ideal. They’ll still have plenty of time to write it, even if you’re applying EA/ED/etc. Make sure when you ask, you provide them with enough information about yourself to write a personal and informed letter. Even if they know you well inside the classroom, they don’t necessarily know YOU. Some teachers will ask for it independently, and in hindsight it may have helped to provide the others with a little attached sheet.

I don’t think that would be too much, but if you get a chance I’d contact the various admission offices and ask if they would be bothered.

I would definitely wait to ask them in person. That way, you can take care of all the details with them right away. I also think it would feel awkward to ask them over email and then confront them later in person to remind them about deadlines and such. That’s just my opinion.
