Hi guys, I'm planning on applying to the University of Connecticut's Combined Medicine program this upcoming December, and wanted to know your opinions on who I should have write me a letter of recommendation. I already have one good recommendation, which leaves one more to go. My best two options are a wrestling coach who I had freshman and sophomore year, who really understands my good work ethic and leadership skills (I somewhat kept in contact with him junior year). And my martial arts instructor who I've known since I was about ten years old, who I have studied under and now work for as an instructor for youth classes (ages 7-12). He also understands my good work ethic, as well as my leadership skills. In addition to this, I also have formed a relationship with the head of my hospital's volunteer program (Yale New Haven Hospital), but I have only known her for about a year and a half and we don't communicate often. Thank you so much for your help guys!

Why isn’t your 2nd rec letter from another teacher? They want two LORs – you can be sure that 2 teacher recs will be much better testimony to your suitability as a BA/MD student than a coach or martial arts instructor.

Yes, I understand that for normal admissions colleges require LORs from teachers, but for this program, the LORs can come from anybody. @T26E4

That’s what I understood as well. It was in that light that I advised you like I did. I still contend that a 2nd strong teacher’s rec is MUCH better than one from a coach/martial arts instructor for the academically heavy pgm you’re pursuing.

Are you possibly referring to Irma Dadic for the Volunteering program at the hospital? If that is the case, I think you can ask her, as doing the program for two years can show some good commitment and if you’re on friendly terms, she could have some good things to say. Im also looking for UCONN as well. Best of luck!
