Letters of Recommendation Question

Hi guys, I currently have three teachers that I am interested in getting a letter of rec from (AP biology, Honors American Lit, and Chinese 4 H). Btw I am chinese. Most of the schools that I am looking at want 2 letters of rec from academic teachers. I feel that my Chinese 4H teacher and AP biology teacher would be able to write the best rec letter for me. However, in my Honors Lit class, I finished with an 89.6 which was not rounded to an A. However, my lit teacher mentioned that he would address this in my letter of rec. So which two teachers should I ultimately send as a letter of rec to colleges? Also, is it really important to send one humanity teacher and one math/science teacher as a letter of rec? I am interested to applying to schools like NYU Stern, University of Chicago, etc.

It doesn’t resonate well for a letter of recommendation to state "how talented or studious or … " you were and then explain why you didn’t get an A.

Chinese [and languages in general] is considered a liberal arts subject. And assuming that you do not speak Chinese at home, the letter of recommendation from the Chinese teacher would work well as the “humanities” letter of recommendation. If you do speak Chinese at home then the recommendation may be less convincing than if Chinese is indeed a second language for you.

Thanks any other advice? I could see my lit teacher explain my improvement in essay writing through. Is any letter mentioning my grade bad then?

Fogcity explained it pretty well, if you speak Chinese at home it wouldn’t help that much if you ask your chinese teacher to write you a rec compared to your english teacher’s rec

Some schools don’t mind if you send 3 LOR’s so if you really wanted to you could send all 3.

In this case I’d make sure the Lit teacher is saying he is intending to give you a strong positive LOR, and take him up on it. A teacher who offers is usually intending to write a good letter. Let him know the level of schools you are applying to, and that you’d get a great lor from the Chinese teacher, but you think a positive one from the Lit class will be really valuable for you. And I think it will show that even though you didn’t get the top grade, you still have someone evaluating you in a very positive light and showing you as a quality student.
