I'm in the late Spring of my Junior year and as I'm planning on applying Early Action to a couple schools, I know I need to gather recommendation letters. The problem is I never really try to connect with teachers, which is kinda coming back to bit me right now.

Two teachers that I did connect with and really like me, and seem to recognize my hard work and intelligence aren't from the most important classes. Is getting a recommendation from two social studies teachers okay? I had one for AP World History, and the other one for AP Mirco/Macro Economics. The colleges I'm applying to don't require a recommendation from any specific class, will these two do? Boston College is my first choice and they say letters from, "one of the five main academic subject areas (English, social studies, science, math, or foreign language,)" will Economics teachers and History teachers suffice?

tl;dr: Is it okay to have 2/3 of your recommendation be from Social Studies/History teachers? I exceled in their AP Micro/Macro and AP World History classes. I may also get a letter from my AP Environmental teacher next year if that changes anything. Thanks! :)

I had the same exact dilemma! I’m really into English the teachers I’m closest to are English teachers. One already promised to give my entire AP Language and Comp class letters, so I needed to choose one more teacher. An English teacher who knows me well, or a teacher from another subject that likes me and knows enough about me to do a great letter? I ended up choosing the latter. It made more sense to let universities know that I have excelled in multiple areas rather than just being a very good English student. Luckily for me, the teacher I chose, who happens to teach AP Environmental as well, is best friends with the English teacher I didn’t choose. The English teacher I didn’t choose also happens to e my advisor and we are very close so she will put a good word in. And the teacher I chose also only writes for the first 10 students who request him and I was one of those 10. So I’m guaranteed to get a great letter because he most likely won’t be frustrated or overwhelmed with tons of letters. So I recommend choosing two teachers in different subjects. The college will already see that you are great in Social Studies because of your grades and you don’t want to bore an admissions officer with two letters showing skills in the same area. Broaden your horizons and let them know that you are an all around amazing student who is especially good in social studies. I’m a junior too btw!

@KiaralnNYC Good point about showing my skills in multiple areas, I honestly hadn’t thought of it that way! I guess I’ll definitely be asking my AP Enviro teacher after all haha
