I’m getting my letters of rec from my Accounting and my US History teacher (my accounting teacher gave me a school award for best work ethic/performance in her accounting classes and she worked with me for DECA and my history teacher advises my club)- all my colleges allow recs from non-core teachers so Accounting will be fine. I was a bit worried however, that I chose the two teachers that are not AP/Honors (my other 4 are, but they are known to put little to no effort on the recs). My major will be either economics or finance depending on the college- should these two teacher be okay? Also, I need to choose one of these teachers for a rec for UNC, where I decided to major in Economics because their business admin major had a concentration in finance but in general, the major was a bit too broad for me. I know my accounting teacher loves me, but would giving a rec from my accounting teacher be a bit odd seeing as I’m majoring in economics?
No. If these are the teachers who will give you the best possible recommendations, go with them. I’ve heard of a handful of colleges that ask for letters from specific departments, so check out the specific requirements on each web site of the schools to which you want to apply, just to be safe. You should be good to go. Ask soon! Teachers appreciate it when you give them plenty of time for these things.
How do you know the teachers don’t put effort into the recs?
Has anyone seen one of these recs?
@bopper one of the teachers is a bit disorganized and I’m afraid he won’t remember to turn it in on time (he also doesn’t know me that well), the other, a student had accidentally seen a rec after she canceled an application to a summer program and a bug allowed her to see the rec (it was very general)
I do have a choice though. My history teacher likes me but doesn’t know me well and will likely write a bland recommendation, though he is the advsior of my club. My language arts teacher is an incredible writer, and we can tell he puts in a lot of effort on recommendations, but he is known to be extremely honest on recommendations- he frequently writes negative recommendations. I have no reason to think he doesn’t like me but I’m worried about taking the risk?
One way to get around that is to ask: “I am applying to colleges…would be able to write a strong recommondation?”
