Letters of Recommendation?

Is it weird to ask for a recommendation during sophomore year? Would it be better to ask towards the end of junior year? Problem with this is that my teacher probably wouldn't have as much to say if I ask in junior year as opposed to asking during sophomore year in which case, my teacher will be able to give a full review of what type of person I am? The reason I ask this question is because I don't come by a teacher that I like and vice versa....

P.S. Forgive me if I'm asking the wrong type of question because I really don't understand the college application process yet. Reason I say this is because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to ask during sophomore year and if I did, what happens to the letter? Do I keep it or does he?...

Regardless of when you ask for the recommendation, colleges STRONGLY prefer that you get teachers who have you in junior or senior year (probably preferably junior year). If this teacher from your sophomore year will continue to interact with you on a regular basis in some class or as a coach or in some other way, then he/she may make a fine candidate for a recommendation.

If not, you could ask this teacher to write your recommendation for you at the end of your junior year if you really have to, but I think it would be inappropriate to ask for a recommendation a year before you plan to send it. We change a LOT from year to year, especially during high school.
