Letters?

Did anybody else receive a letter from Cornell?

what was it about?

it included a summary of the class of 2014 and listed contacts for different regions of the US/different college/schools within Cornell. the first sentence is, “I am delighted to learn that you have applied for admission to Cornell.”

Yes, I got the same letter just yesterday. It had an attached class profile and basically reviewed stats that I committed to memory long ago. The letter basically talked about how to acquire additional information, correct?

yeah that’s pretty much exactly what the letter said.

Did any legacy out there get a letter today saying “I am delighted to learn you have applied to Cornell…I am writing to you today to offer additional information that may be of help. We do not want to be guilty of assuming that a family connection automatically translates into perfect knowledge of Cornell…” Final paragraph “…We look forward to getting to know you better and wish you a most successful senior year.” And then it includes the Class of 2014 profile.

Sounds like it’s the same letter the others have talked about but modified for legacies. Anyway, it almost reads like a pre-rejection letter, especially the part about getting to know you better. I’ve applied ED so I hope they get to know me quick! Anyone else have a take on it?

No letter here ):

@helloeveryone1: Yes, I’m legacy and that’s the letter I’m talking about. I guess I didn’t read the letter carefully enough to see that it concerned legacy status. I’m not really too sure what to think of it though; maybe it’s to please the alum(s) in the family so they keep donating $$$.

Glad to get your feedback/confirmation on the legacy thing, Don Q. And relieved to see I wasn’t the only one confused.

Yeah you too. I guess we’ll just have to wait till decisions to come out to find out what those letters were leaning towards (positive, negative). Only 17 more days…

helloeveryone1: My DS got the same letter yesterday. We did not interpret it as positive or negative and certainly did not take it to be a “pre rejection” letter at all. I think it is a letter saying that since you are a legacy and most likely have not been contacted for an alumni info meeting (since you most likely live in a home with a Cornell grad who can tell you lots of info!) Cornell wanted to give you the phone numbers and e-mails of admissions staff in case you did have any questions.

Few are contacted by an alumnus in the ED round because of the time crunch so a group to eliminate from needing a contact would be a legacy. The 2014 profile was not discouraging it was simply the facts about the numbers and I am sure that all of you know those before applying.

I know that this is a stressful wait but do not worry yourself needlessly. It is very important to remember that the school where you belong will be the one that accepts you. You have done all the hard work during these last four years so the school that you are meant to attend will be the one. I know it is so hard to want something and sometimes it does not come through but in hindsight (which is impossible to have in the moment) it ALWAYS turns out to be ok.

So if Cornell is where you are meant to be you will be accepted. If for some reason it does not work out, I promise you that the school you end up choosing will be the right one. You are smart and motivated and you will be a success where ever you land. It is very hard to see it in the moment but my life experiences have shown me time and time again that things work out how they are meant to be. Good luck!

Things turn out the best for those who make the best of the way things turn out.

So, are we in agreement that this letter was only sent out to legacies?

Sounds like it

Did anyone else get this letter before? Is it a pre-rejection letter for legacies?

Son received same letter in Nov and was accepted ED in Dec.

My D received this letter for RD, in connection to legacy, and at first, it did make her nervous for some reason because of the wording. She did go o to have an alumni interview. that was scheduled by the college, and that went quite well… She had a lot of questions and they answered all of them. She did receive an RD acceptance so there is no reason to take this letter in any negative way!

Best to all of you!

@cormom15 - To clarify, your D applied RD and already received a decision? I was told Mar.27th is the RD decision date.

No, she is an upperclassman at Cornell right now!
