Letts Hall- 2nd floor

As everybody knows, Letts Hall’s 2nd floor is all female floor. Now, I have to choose which room to pick. Could you please which side is better? South or North? Do they have an air conditioner?? Thank you!!

All rooms are all air conditioned. I don’t think there is a big difference between north or south, but definitely pick a room with a view (not facing the courtyard). My D was on Letts 6th floor last year and had a view of Rock Creek Park and the Washington Monument in the distance. Of course, the views won’t be as good from the 2nd floor, but you still don’t want to face the courtyard.

Agreed - it will be slightly quieter if you face away from the courtyard (a very social area), and the views are pretty good near the top (not as much on the 2nd floor, unfortunately). There is a very nice lounge on the 6th floor though with lots of windows and a view of the Washington Monument (plus two lounges on your own floor).

What room numbers have a good view in Letts? I can’t tell from the floor plans. My son has to select tomorrow and he doesn’t want a view of the courtyard.

When you look at the Letts floor plan maps, on one side you see arrows saying “to Anderson”. The rooms on that side face in to the quad. Although the rooms are all identical, other general considerations are rooms away from the lounges/elevators and stairwells are going to have less traffic going by.

This is still confusing because the side that says to Anderson appears to be the front of Letts, at least according to the first floor plan. Can you give me a room number that is on the non-courtyard side. Also is it safe to just pick an end room?

The “front” of Letts (and Anderson) face the courtyard. I believe that room X15 (215, 315. etc) do not face the courtyard. End rooms are fine too, although you may get some traffic back and forth from Anderson.

Thank you so much! That was so helpful.

I can tell you, as a letts 6 resident (south side), you DO NOT have a view of the washington monument, and probably not rock creek park either. From the 6th floor south side you can see the national cathedral and other churches off in the distance (which is a really nice view), but i never glimpsed the washington monument. Letts is divided into two dumbbell type circles, one side is Letts North and one side is Letts South. Both have a south facing side, and that is the side that faces the cathedral. Letts 6 South WEST facing gets a nice view as well (probably the “rock creek park” view). Anderson South WEST facing should also get that view.

Anderson won’t get the nice views, but I’d still pick rooms there over Letts. At AU, letts is known as “The Letto” (like ghetto). it’s not bad, but anderson is much newer and nicer.

here are the floor plans ([Housing & Dining Programs | Residence Hall Floor Plans](http://www.american.edu/ocl/housing/floorlayouts.cfm))

Sans Souci: You probably know my D, since you lived on the floor together. But she did have a view of the Washington Monument from her window. I saw it when I moved her in and remember commenting how pretty it looked. Of course, it was far away and kinda tiny - but it was there!

My daughter loved Northside but there is such a mixing of new friends in a matter of two weeks that it really doesn’t matter. Letts is a good dorm from a Mom’s perspective. I felt totally assured that my daughter was happy and safe there.
