LGBT at HMC?

Hey all.

So I've totally fallen in love with Mudd, but even though decisions haven't come out yet I still find myself weighing my potential options for next year a lot. The one thing that's still a huge question mark with Mudd is what life is like for LGBT Mudders. I haven't heard really anything either way, but the gender ratio is a bit disconcerting - my experience with this issue in male-dominated environments has not been good so far to say the least.

Anyone affiliated with HMC care to weigh in?

I’ve heard that they were very open to that, but you’ll need a word from a mudder

There are definitely several LGBT Mudders on campus. Even though Mudd is male-dominated, there is a culture of acceptance of everyone that starts from the social standards. Officially, of course, no discrimination or abuse is tolerated but I haven’t heard of any official complaints. The honor code and small community keeps people in check. I think you’ll find that Mudders are not only very accepting but embracing of variety in people.

I had several friends at Mudd who were openly very gay. In fact, one of them was a prominent member of the dorm and we would send out funny emails to eachother regarding stupid stuff (stupid videos and “hey, who took my pants” and stuff like that). He would sometimes allude (in a mass emailing) to his boyfriend coming over and everyone really didn’t care at all.

Basically, you’ll be taken care of. Mudd is socially quite liberal and we embrace variety and people being able to express who they really are. Also, people will be too busy working their butts off to really care (if they have a conservative upbringing). Even if they did care pretty much the whole Mudd student body/faculty/5C’s will have your back.

There is also a LGBT support network at the 5C’s if you need it. I suspect you won’t unless you are in the middle of coming out or something.
Straight, Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgendered, White, Black, Green, Yellow? Who cares. If you love math/science/engineering go to Mudd!

I went on a tour a few months ago, and the campus was absolutely PLASTERED in LGBT student group posters. Seriously, every 3 feet. The guides pretended not to notice though. :P

god, this will so out my identity on these boards… but I’m co-president of PRISM, Mudd’s queer and allied group. The acronym stands for People Respecting Individuals’ Sexualities at Mudd, we’re going to have a talk in the future about a new acronym because it excludes gender. so that’s one group, it’s fairly active, ~7-10 members at any given meeting. if you have questions you can post them or PM me.

as for life in general, people at Mudd don’t care and are supportive. the administration is ridiculously supportive as well, plus at least two of them are LGBT. the faculty are awesome, too. trust me, you’ll find it really friendly here.

I would say LGBT social life on the 5Cs is actually female-dominated because of the presence of Scripps. if you have questions I’m open to PMs.

yeah, that was a project me and another Mudder did for our queer studies class… link to the site with digital pictures of the posters is here: [Gender Pending](http://genderpending.blogspot.com).

It’s good too be in a socially liberal setting.

Note that the Princeton Review rated us as one of the top 20 most accepting schools of LGBT students.

Another reason to love HMC…sigh

Among the top reasons my visit made me 100% certain it was the place I wanted to apply ED1 to
I just went through some issues regarding my sexuality with my school administration… Let’s just say I’m more eager than ever to get to Mudd.
