"Liberal Arts" at MIT

I was wondering what the liberal arts undergraduate departments at MIT were like. I know that they are heavily focused on math and science, but are their programs in the humanities, etc. good as well?

You can always cross-register into Harvard for that ;)

Oh, and vice versa for their math/science starved kids.

how does cross registering work in regards to tuiton? how much extra is it to go take a class at harvard

It doesn't cost anything extra to take a class at Harvard but MIT won't allow cross-registration unless the class is something the school doesn't particularly offer like Arabic or Latin - humanties stuff. You definitely can't take Calculus @ Harvard and get credit. Also, Harvard's schedule is different so class starts later, ends later, and finals are after X-Mas Break (at least for fall term).

I think there are also restrictions on how many classes you can cross registrer for, and special hoops for freshman.

I doubt if it's something anyone would want to do on a regular basis - the difference in calendars basically means you lose large chunks of vacation time if you are taking a course at the other school. MIT students have exams before Christmas and then the entire month of January is like a "mini-semester" they can spend on campus, at home, or traveling. Harvard has finals after Christmas, so an MIT student might have to come back 3 weeks earlier than they otherwise would specifically because of their Harvard course. Spring breaks are also at different times, so you would lose spring break. The semesters start and end at different times which could cause housing issues for people in dorms.

thanks everyone, i was just curious. it seemed interesting, but probably would end up being more of a hassle than i am looking for. im sure all the MIT work will keep me more than occupied
