Any feedback on this program? Should my son apply? The deadline is coming up soon. He is probably 90% sure he is attending UVM although I am dragging him to another school’s accepted students day to be sure. He did not get into the Honors College and the letter they sent us said students who partipate in this program have a good chance of getting in Sophomore year. Also what about the other LC options? We looked into Business & Entrepreneurship which seemed interesting although the dorms seemed pretty far away (Redstone campus). Was thinking Outdoor Experience because he is really into hiking etc but just read that like the Wellness Environment there is a no drug and alcohol pledge and sorry but I know my son and that would be a dealbreaker. Honestly, he just wants a typical college experience. What if he doesn’t sign up for any of these? They seem to really push them. He really wants to room with a friend (one or more of his best high school buds may be attending) but it looks like you have to be assigned the LC first and then request to room with someone within it. My son is actually not sure if his friends were accepted into the School of Arts and Sciences or Business.
My DD applied to Humanities Scholars. According to UVM literature 60% from those programs move to honors college in Sophmore year. She liked the style (suites) & location (university heights ) of the dorm for Scholars. Also guaranteed/mandatory enrollment in 2-3 integrated, seminar classes. Seems like a no-brainer to us! None of the other LCs sparked her interest.
The experience of her many cousins advise against choosing a roomie. Better to have friends spread around then strain the friendship in tiny room!
Best of luck to your son
Thanks @Cof22mom! By the way, according to the website the dorms for this program will be on the Athletic Campus next year.
You’re right…I guess the road is University Hieghts & the buildings with that name are for the Honors College. I’m guessing the Scholars programs are housed in the Living Learning building next door. Will know more after admitted students day!
It’s Living/Learning D. If you go to this link https://www.uvm.edu/reslife/halls and select the Liberal Arts Scholars program you will see it. We actually just came from Admitted Students day on Friday (GREAT!) but did not go to the Liberal Arts Scholars presentation because he was not sure it was what he was interested in. When we got home there was actually a letter inviting him to apply, so now we are considering it again. he is considering applying for the Social Science Scholars which would align nicely with with the Global Studies major he is considering switching into (thanks to a fabulous presentation on this major we attended at the Accepted Students Day).
Just wanted to add we went to accepted students day in February and went to the presentation for the liberal arts scholars program and it seems really great. If my son ends up at UVM I will encourage him to apply for this program. The social science scholars professor was so nice!
I wish we had attended that presentation! FYI - you have to apply for the program in April. It says decisions are made April 26th. I guess if you end up going somewhere else they give away the spot? Kind of odd. I am encouraging my son to apply.
