Has anyone been to the honors college at UVM? I just got in and am wondering how difficult it would be in terms of rigor as well as how well students get to now their professors. Most of my other schools are small LACs.
Same with my D. It sounds like it makes the University feel much more like a small LAC, faculty attention, with the seminars, etc., doesn’t it?
How did you find out about the Honors College admission - did you get an email or a letter or is it on the Admission status page? S got a Presidential Scholarship but i didn’t see anything about Honors. Thanks! And Congratulations!
A letter came in the mail today. It’s 200 kids (out of 2400ish incoming) from all different departments. On the portal there is a button where you can accept the invitation however you also have to pay the fee to accept. We are in MA. I think letters are going out from now until March.
Thanks redpoodles! Your D should be proud that she was chosen, regardless of where she ultimately decides to go!
My son received a letter by regular mail yesterday (Jan 15).
My daughter has not received her letter yet, but the her portal shows the invitation to the honors college.
One of my D’s first choice colleges is UVM because of the Honors College. However, a student doesn’t apply directly into the Honors College, they are invited from the applicant pool. I wish UVM could see the other side of the equation. Since they only “invite” a student, the student who was not admitted into the program can initially only figure this out by looking at sites like College Confidential because people post that they are receiving invitations. For a student who applied to UVM as a top choice because of the Honors College (and let the University know this was the case) this is a difficult position to be in (even more so since people are writing that they had never considered UVM until they got the Honors College notification).
I wonder if UVM might consider another way to handle this. What if, when applying to UVM if a student met the general requirements of the Honors College (my daughter did) he/she could check a box saying they want to be considered for the Honors College with the understanding that admission is highly selective, if the student was not accepted the college could send out a rejection letter. I wonder what other people think?
My daughter is a junior in the Honors College. She also applied to and was accepted into some great small LACs, but has never regretted her decision to attend UVM. Her Honors College seminars, taken during the first two years, were great, and the perk of being able to sign up for classes first has made a real difference in her college experience.
I got in!
That’s awesome @UVMmom. Did she live in Honors housing? If so did she like them?
She did live in Honors College housing for her first two years, and her experience there was great. The rooms were pretty nice as well. Like many juniors, she is living off campus this year.
That’s good. I asked because I’ve heard that many of UVM’s other dorms are very small and have a reputation as having a lots of stoners.
Do you they tell you whether you got admitted to the honors college when they send acceptance letters?
I got accepted today but I can’t find any mention of the honors college on my portal… I expected to get into the honors college because they gave me a Presidential Scholarship lol
Honors College doesn’t come with the regular admission decision. Mine came almost a month later.
@Duvarc, it comes later, however, getting the scholarship doesn’t guarantee the honors college. Each school picks who to invite from their top applicants.
@storrs86 I understand what you’re saying but getting a rejection letter is worse than not getting an invitation, IMO. My D got a “we’re considering you for the honors college but we want to see your semester grades” notice from another school and it was kind of a downer, even though she’s still in the running for that honors college. I wish they hadn’t sent anything, because now it feels like she was the last one picked for the team if she does get in. A “the honors college rejects you” letter would totally turn her off from the school. Conversely, my D did not get into the UMass honors college although she had the stats, and there was no notice/mention of its existence or anything. Still a bummer, but not a total downer as anyone can apply later and she doesn’t feel last picked, just that there must have been many more qualified applicants who took the spots.
I have heard many say that they do track interest…wondering if it would be of any benefit to call. I’m an incoming neuroscience major in the class of 2019. I’ve taken college courses at another university in my area for the past two years of high school, making me an academic sophomore this fall. Wouldn’t it be enough to qualify me? If you don’t mind me asking, what were the stats your child/student obtained in order to be admitted? The HCOL would provide a smaller community of academically driven students…something particularly appealing. Fingers crossed! Congratulations to all who have been invited! It is a great accomplishment!
@kel13r Stats for D: 4.22 GPA, vigorous public school curriculum w/ 9 AP’s; 32 ACT.
Stats for my daughter: 3.9+ out of 4.0 at rigorous public high school with many honors classes. 2210 SATs.
