Liberal Arts??

Is Emory a liberal arts college? I am almost positive it is NOT.. however everyone keeps mentioning to me that they thought it WAS liberal arts.. did it used to be or something? because I don't understand why everyone has this idea that emory is a liberal arts college...

You are correct. Emory is a university not a LAC. I suppose you might consider Oxford College of Emory a LAC, but not really.

Maybe they're thinking of Emerson? That is a LAC.

Emory is a university.

However, like most mid-size private universities, the undergrads at Emory study a liberal arts curriculum.

A "liberal arts" education is broad-based study accross all disciplines (science/math, social sciences, and humanities) that emphasizes critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills. It is the opposite of a "vocational" approach that emphasizes in-depth specialization in a narrow field such as engineering or nursing school.

For the most part, the top small colleges and mid-size universities all teach essentially the same stuff -- a liberal arts curriculum.

State universities tend to be a mix with most undergrads studying a liberal arts curriculum, but others in specialized undergrad vocationally-oriented schools within the university.

okay thanks guys for clarifying that... I'm just confused why everone keeps asking if its liberal arts.. one or two are even surprised when i tell them its not. wonder where they got that idea..

sry its just its getting tiring to keep saying "No its not a liberal arts college" and wanted to get the real truth

Well, the issue as a whole (LAC vs. university) is a blurry line in a gray area, which makes the matter tough to define. It isn't that big of a deal, though, is it?
