My son telephoned me from Times Square...he was there with 8 other plebes and of course they were in their "whites"

It was hard to understand him with all the noise in the background...he told me that they had been stopped by at least 15 different groups of people, including Canadians (go figure!), to pose for pictures with them. Actually, he had to hang up abruptly for more photo shots with another group of strangers....

Hey, maybe if they charged per PIC they would have enough money for their commute back to Kings Point (lol)

Update on their time in the Big Apple....his group went out to eat at a restaurant that had a 40min. wait time; however, the plebes all looking so good in their whites were seated immediately!

PS...Nor did they lack attention from admiring females!!!

Yep. I got much of the same story except the requested photos were from a group of English folks visiting. I even received one with some of the locals (girls). That first liberty was a little slice of heaven. Ahhhhhhh.....to be young, in uniform & in NYC! What a hoot!

Similar story when we were in Washington, D.C. with our son. Unfortunately, for him, he had his parents with him.

Perhaps we should start a men's only thread so we can hear about what your sons DIDN'T tell you. THAT's the rest of the story. [For you geezers old enough to remember Paul Harvey.]

Bill! You're ok then! Was worried about you blowing away. Glad you're still with us!

Oh don't you think Prayerfulmom & I didn't know what was going on. We just didn't post it here. We both got an email about some activities done by some other kids that, shall we say, were a bit over the top. There were some true grown up activities going on and some are paying for it today with some true grown up head-aches. Glad ours weren't involved (this time) is all I can say. Lessons learned the hard way I'm sure. Glad its not me!!!! ;)

Uh...I love Paul Harvey! Gotta go. Off to take some more geritol......

Bossf51, where do the Coasties go on liberty? New York City is a little far away, right? I'm applying to Coast Guard, just wondering what its like.

Well on a "short" that is a one-day liberty they usually go into New London. Also close by is Providence RI. NY is a little farther away, as is Boston. Both of the latter about 2 hours away. However this summer my son and his mates had liberty in such places as Rota, Spain, Madiera, Portugal, the Canary Islands, and Lisbon as they sailed on the training ship Eagle as part of swab summer.

Soccer! What the hey! You're in USMMA here. Boss, they follow you wherever you go. LOL Soccer, I am so just kidding. Welcome and good luck with your application process. Its an exciting time for you and your family! You picked the right guy to ask your question to. He's our resident CGA authority head. Have you visited the campus yet? Its an amazing place. Not to be out-done.... Have you also applied to USMMA and, you know, that other maritime academy?

Uh... Yep. These Swabs & Plebes are living the lives of rock-stars these days. Mine went to pay last night and had his tab picked up as well. I should go hang out with him more. :) A no wait line at the Empire State Bldg. and several young ladies stopping for that all important photo with the men in white. That last part is kinda gaggie if ya ask me...A little embarrassing so they tried to explain that they were just in an academy & not out there in the big bad world like the soldiers and sailors but it didn't seem to matter.

And who wouldn't love to have a buddy named "Sully". Does that just not sound like its out of a sea hero novel!? Glad these boys are having a good time. Blowing off steam from all the stress of these midterms can't be a bad deal.

Hey Jamzmom, don't worry I'm applying USMMA too. I have a friend who goes there, so I don't need to ask as many questions. I'm also applying to USMA and USAFA. I have been to USAFA, but not to any of the other Academies. I am planning a trip to USMA, USMMA and CGA sometime later this year. I love New York City, so hopefully I'll be able to stop by there too. Applying to academies is exciting, I just wish I could find out tomorrow where I got in! It's been my dream since 5th grade, which is a little crazy.

Best of luck as you go through this process. You'll find a lot of information here, and from your various admissions reps. Keep us posted on your progress.

Not so very crazy soccer! Its great that you've had that goal set for so long. Bet you're nuts with the paper work though! Thats quite ambitious to want to serve your country in any way that you can. Proud of you! Hang tough with it all. You're going to spend some sleepless nights soon. Its murder to not hear anything as soon as you'd like.

Haha, the paperwork is a little hefty. I'm done with USMA and USAFA, just have USMMA and CGA left. Just got a letter from West Point, my guidance counselor sent in my Activities Record without signing it. I just about died! Once I have checked it over a million times I don't want to see it again! I'm glad to also have the CFA done, it takes a lot of pressure off. Fall is the busiest time of year for me, but I still love it. Thanks for the encouragement and for the advice!

soccer - bet your gc at school is nuts. Prolly cringes every time he/she sees you coming. "Nooooo not that kid again with all that paperwork!" HA! Jamz took his gc flowers at the end of the year because he bugged her on a daily basis. Keep up the good work!

Maybe you don't want to wait until the end of the year for those flowers. And I'll bet Jamzmom will agree that for some gc's, chocolates may be preferable. ;)

haha my GC didnt know me at all my first 2 and a half years at my school.. there are 2100 students and 3 GCs... once i started the AIM application process she quickly learned my name... it was either that or when i came into her office every other day for like two weeks cause she wouldnt let me drop computer science... haha oh and i got it dropped of course. never give up!

Haha, I think my GC does cringe everytime I come around. There are two, and one is my soccer coach so I know her pretty well. I will definitley bring some chocolate, I think she'd like that. Can't bring until the end of the season at least though, don't want the other girls to think I'm sucking up.

Yep! Good idea! They really do work hard and trying to keep academy applications moving in the right direction can be insane when you've got 2,000 other kids to keep up with as well. I feel for them!
