I’m going to high school in the fall and I’m going to be taking AP and Honors classes. I’m nervous that I will have so much work and be overloaded with stress. I’m also worried that I won’t have any time for things I want to do because I will have so much work. Can you guys give me a general description of how much work you get as an AP student and if you feel like you have adequate time to do what you want to do?
It varies by school but AP classes weren’t very hard at my school until we started cramming at the end of April. Compared to things like IB where projects ruin your life, AP isn’t too bad.
Only suggestions are: time manage and don’t stress yourself out!
Time management is key as said above. I know I’m in the minority so don’t take this too seriously but I ended up with all A’s and maybe pulled out my bookbag at home 2 times a week on average. Did the majority of homework during class. Don’t stress! High school is so much better than middle school
It depends on the class as well as the teacher. For me, average HW was about 45 minutes per day, although there were things like science lab reports to history research papers which added to the time. It’s all about knowing your limits and utilizing time management.
It’s not AP but the teacher. some AP take 0 min and some are several hours. Just do what te A student’s do
Managing an AP schedule isn’t difficult if you are a B student and teachers aren’t evil. IB on the other hand takes over every waking hour and you can’t drop your courses, you have to drop out of IB program.
I’m a rising senior, so I’m probably going to take four or five more AP’s, but of the seven that I’ve already taken, the only one I’d consider genuinely “challenging” would be Chemistry and maaaybe Biology. My workload varied. Some days I’d have maybe like two hours, and other days I’d have like 30-45 minutes. It really does depend on the teacher. You’ve probably heard this a lot, but don’t underestimate the importance of time management. If you master that, and your teachers aren’t horned devils that derive pleasure from destroying students’ lives, you should have little to no problem doing whatever you want to do.
This coming from a kid who takes daily naps during the school year. :)>-
Just like how the other posters pointed out, it really depends on the teacher’s teaching style, reputation and coursework expectation.
It also depends on you as well.
For instance with AP Biology, it’s common to cover a chapter’s (college textbook) worth of material every week in order to prep for the AP test. You may be required to do reading on your own or to take notes during lectures (in addition to mini labs and lab station activities). The time spent on assimilating and understanding the material would be commensurate with the study skills and habits you have established thus far. For some, it may be 20 minutes, others 45 mins -1 hr worth of daily reading, studying and reviewing to feel comfortable with the pace and material. Some simply study the night before the exam and feel fine. Homework and lab reports would naturally add some extra time.
Most of the AP classes have an ebb and flow to them, meaning some days/weeks will be busy, while others will be light. You won’t find yourself drowned in homework and tests if that’s what you’re worried about. Given this flux, you’ll find time to do the things that you want to do (sports, video games, shopping, extracurricular activities), but be responsible with your time. Everyone is given an equal 24/7 time frame, and it’s up to you to use it judiciously.
Just know that at the end of the day, all teachers have a vested interest in your schooling. So don’t be afraid to approach and to ask questions before and after class. You’ll find that they are regular people who will do their best to help you out.
It depends on your teacher and your own work habits. I typically spend two hours on homework for one AP class, usually I have club activities and honors classes, so I usually wouldn’t go to bed until eleven.
If you’re scared, maybe you can try taking an AP class for a topic you like. My AP World History class had a very heavy workload, but I enjoyed the class nevertheless because I love history.
You will be fine. I took 6 AP classes last year, and had no homework most of the time. I am the type of person that likes to do stuff all at once, but I rarely spent more than a few hours on any given night. Like others have said, it depends a lot on the school and teacher.
It varies from school to school and class to class. From my experience at least, APs aren’t much busy work, but require a good amount of studying to do well on tests.
AP’s are supposed to be equivalent to a lot of general ed - type classes in college, so if you plan on studying in a university, get used to it.
For me at least, my AP’s weren’t too overloading in terms of workload.
What year will you be and what AP class(es) are we talking about?
My AP Chem killed me. Hours spent on the lab reports. Hours spent on the AP test prep. I loved the class though.
