Hello everyone,

I have recently been scared by those who have intimated to the lack of a community feel at Columbia. Often, Columbia's workload is perceived as unbearable and good grades seemingly unattainable. for those who attend, is this claim baseless? Are these merely people wishing to scare me with unsubstantiated claims? if possible, could someone please share how many hours a typical econ-aspiring student works in a day? are the majors hard in terms of prerequisites? Also what is the community like? How does it or did it feel being a first year? I heard that the workload for freshman is especially cumbersome due to the gargantuan assignments from both LITHUM & Uwriting. Is this true - for an international student whose english has withered over the years, will i be able to cope with the english level? The entailed work in both courses, is it laboriously tedious, vigorous and gruelingly hard? Thank you in advance for your response and in answering my what may be childish whims.

Since no one has jumped in, I’ll go ahead and give you a quick answer:

As a transfer student (from a large state school in the South) I was actually surprised at how easy it was to find a community here. Still, I can’t speak for everyone. I’m part of a few performance clubs on campus (theatre and dance) and I’ve grown really close to the people in them. For those who are less inclined to join clubs, I imagine it may be a little more difficult to rely solely on classrooms as community builders (the case at any university). Students here are very motivated and involved in numerous, different pursuits. This can make it seem like people keep to themselves, but that’s diversity for you. Clubs and core classes often bring everyone together in the end, though.

While Columbia is a tough school, the workload manageable. My problem is that I’m so keen on getting the most out of each semester that I end up undertaking too much, but I still manage to enjoy myself.
