Life at NU

What is the day to day life at NU like?
What are the dorm rooms like?

Welp, I’ve finally ended my streak of 11 AM or later courses. Woke up at 8, got my stuff together, getting ready for Intermediate Micro at 9:30. Then I’m gonna go scribble donor appreciation letters for fundraising (clubs get a dollar for every letter written by one of their members), and head to my next class. Probably grab lunch. Then I come back, think about starting homework, ignore it, and drunkenly play video games with my roommate and our friends. I’ve gymnastics a couple times a week, and I’ve started designing for the school newspaper (not sure whether I goofed there, but ah well). And I keep meaning to see more student plays and concerts, but I keep, uh, not going. Happens.

It is mid April and at NU, the weather is 3 degrees C and it is RAINING

Do read:

I’m from California, so not used to single and negative temperatures. What types of coats do you wear to keep you warm? I was thinking about a down that goes to the waist, but my parents say that won’t be enough…

I grew up in Evanston, Illinois. Your mother is correct. Buy a regular, long length down filled coat with a hood. Also, buy a scarf and really good mittens (mittens keep you warmer than gloves). You will need a good pair of water proof boots. Northwestern is on the shore of Lake Michigan and it is very cold in the winter.

I would recommend any thick down coat with a large hood (to keep your head, cheeks and ears covered) that goes below your waist (it doesn’t have to go down to your knees). Just enough to keep you warm. Midwest weather can be extremely cold (I lived in Illinois and currently live in Michigan!)

Get rain-proof or leather boots to walk in the snow and ice. It doesn’t have to be designer shoes. Get anything that keeps your feet warm and provides good traction on ice. Ditto on gloves/mittens.

Buy some corduroy pants too because they keep your legs warmer than jeans.

Mom knows best.
Get the absolute warmest clothing you can: full length down coat, scarves, mittens, sweaters, boots, etc.

northwestern has a traditional campus experience, we have our own campus in a nice, quasi-suburban area (I liken it to cambridge, MA or Georgetown if you’ve ever been to either of those places… slightly less urban than georgetown) with the added benefit of being next to chicago. the greek scene is pretty big and available to those who want to participate, there are plenty of house parties, college bars, and fraternity parties, and when you go out the parties/bars are full of northwestern students, most of which you will know by the end of your freshman year

northwestern is pretty racially segregated, nothing i can say to that, idk why it is but that’s just how it generally is, although no one carries prejudices and there is no amount of animosity, just ethnic groups for the most part hang out in homogenous circles.

No offense, but that’s just one person’s opinion. Even if that was true, everybody is friendly, and if YOU decide to, you can hang out with a lot of people, not just people like you.

And as for the the greek scene, it’s not like a southern frat. It’s not crazy “frat bros” running around being stupid with huge hazing rituals. You aren’t going to be a GDI if you aren’t in a frat, and people hang out with non-greeks, or greeks all the time from what I’ve heard. If you want to party, go to bars, etc. people do, if you don’t want to, other people don’t.

Science/Math courses at Northwestern are reputed to be REALLY hard so I bet you’re not alone. When I talked to a science professor before, he mentioned that students frequently come to his office crying because they get low grades despite working really hard. I have about 10 friends who dropped out of pre-med because of the rigor.

Something like 2/3rds of all nu students who enroll planning to be pre-med end up dropping it before graduation, and I believe most of that happens through first year attrition. It’s a curve- someone WILL be at the bottom, regardless of how much you work or how smart you are.
