Whats it like for a freshman coming in?

I can’t really say from a freshman’s perspective as I transferred into UA as a junior and also I am a commuter student. I can answer from the perspective as a new student at UA.

UAlbany has A LOT of events in the beginning of the semester to make new students feel welcome. One of their big events in the beginning of the fall semester is their candling lighting event; it’s a pretty great way of getting you pumped to be a great dane! There is also another event where all the clubs/organizations gather on collins circle to recruit new members (especially freshmen) and there is also other things like food/games and stuff. This is also in the beginning of fall semester. You will get tons of emails about different opportunities to get involved with campus.

I HIGHLY recommend that you join a club/organization; campus involvement is not only important in building your resume, but it will also provided you with awesome experiences and you will meet tons of people. Perhaps consider joining a sorority as this is a great way of experiencing the social life that UA has to offer.

UA is a big place with tons of people; you’re bound to make friends and as a freshman (as with any college), there are other people in the same boat as you. Just don’t be shy and talk to people!

Just FYI, UA is not the party school it once was. I am definitely not saying that UAlbany doesn’t have parties, but it’s certainly not as prominent as it once was. If you’re into that kinda thing, again, a sorority would be worth considering.

I have sort of a love/hate relationship with UA because I’m from Albany and I’ve always wanted to go away to school. However, for people that haven’t lived in Albany and are starting out at UA, I think it’s a great place to grow! Regardless, they will provide a great education.

Good luck!

PS, throughout the earlier weeks of fall semester, clubs/organizations will have tables set up around campus and they will try and gain new members. You’re bound to find something that interests you; just make sure you get involved!!

Thanks for your reply! That was very helpful
