Life at West Point for a girl?

What is it like for a girl to trying to get in to west point (application, CFA, etc)? what is it like for her when she gets there? im not being sexist here, just wondering realistically so that if im accepted i know what to expect! thanks :)

After 3 years of listening to a female high school student work toward a goal of attending West Point, 4 years of being a cadet, and 6 months of being a 2nd Lt in the Army I think I can say that your experience will not be very different than a man’s. You’ll work hard at academics, sports, pt, time management, and everything else you’ve heard about. You’ll be sleepy, energized, excited, angry, bored, overwhelmed, proud, deliriously happy, and crazy frustrated. You’ll make incredible friends and you’ll find a few people you don’t like. (Whenever you’re in a place with 4000+ students, you can’t possibly like everyone.) Your fellow cadets will help you succeed and you’ll help cadets to be successful.

Perhaps some alums, current female cadets, and other parents will comment on this question. There have been some good threads on the topic. I tried a search for the best one (called something like a “female’s guide to west point” - I bet somebody out there has a better memory and can track it down.)

Good luck and let us know what happens.

This thread is 3 years old but still relevant:

One way to find out more from a direct source is to “friend” a female cadet at the academy. You can follow their daily lives, usually with lots of photos, links to stuff they enjoy, pranks they participate in, etc.

basically it will be awkward as hell for you during beast. then you’ll be discriminated against during the academic year. then you’ll prolly start sleeping around. it happens to em all.

wow thank you everyone! that was very helpful and id be glad to keep you updated! :)

as to NCR4 or whatever ur name is… screw you lol. some girls actually have character you know.

just being honest. i saw/see it everyday. talk to a female cadet before you decide to come. and make sure its not because your a recruit or because your dads an O-6.

JAMof4,

That’s the thread I was looking for. Thanks!!

NCRC4,
Your sarcasm is not funny. If you don’t want to post a serious answer then just ignore the question. If this was not a sarcastic answer then I am appalled at your attitude toward women at the academy…“it happens to em all.”

Actually it is probably a good thing that NCR4 posted. That uneducated opinion is also something that you will be exposed to at WP. Fortunately most people with that attitude are too cowardly to actually say it to your face. Good luck!

Our female cadet graduated this past year with momoftwin’s. It was the best 4 years of her life (as she describes it now–wouldnt have said that then, and neither would her male counterparts!). West Point will allow everyone to succeed if that is their desire, male or female. We are not a military family. There are a few bad apples in every class, male and female, and most are weeded out in the process. Women have been first captain, graduated at top of their class, been Rhode scholars, and ranked at the top in physical fittness, just have some of the men. Many have also been ranked high in the military portion of their West point Career. Some women straight out of high school had a higher military ranking than the majority of their prior service male counterparts at the academy. Plenty of female firsties got their first choice of branch and posting because they outperformed enough men academically, physically, and militarily to do it. You dont’t acheive that by “sleeping around” being “discrimated against” or or getting discouraged. NCR4’s perspective is a narrow one and one that usually changes when they figure things out. He is a Plebe so perspectives are pretty narrow for him right now anyway although its sounds like he might be sleeping through some of the briefings lol. Go back and look at the threads from other Plebes in the past (they are there)—some are from female cadets. Good luck and dont let ignorance stand in the way of your dream.

NCR4, while you may be right about West Point being awkward for a female, It is an unjust generalization to presume that all females will be “sleeping around”. If lexacheers wants more info, she should friend a female cadet on facebook. as recommended by pedro4

Hey NCR4, looks like you’re a plebe. Get off CC and start studying for your TEEs, bud. And let’s leave the misogyny at the front gate. PM me your name and company if you don’t know what that means.

Don’t be turned off by this guy – women are an important part of the West Point community and raise the level of scholarship, athleticism, and professionalism at this incredible place. Beat Navy!

hey, yeah im looking to go to west point also and i was wondering if there is any way that i can mentally prepare for beast or just west point in general?

Run—run uphill. downhill, run run run run run. If you are physically in shape it will make the mental stress a lot more bearable.

Okay thanks. i play a lot of sports but thats what I’m gunna start working on, considering i dont run long distance.

I just read “Battle Dress” by a woman from class of 2001 about her experiences; recommend it,but keep in mind that it’s a bit outdated.

And you may get a lot less “mental stress” from the cadre if you’re not the one falling out of the runs!

I’m going to go pick up Amy Efaw’s book soon, heard it was really good. is there anything else i should prepare for when i go up to west point for a college visit?

“Duty First” is also an excellent book with a good description of Beast.
