West Point questions

I'm a sophomore in high school and I'm really interested in attending West Point. I was wondering what life at West point is like for girls and what kind of classes I should take in high school as well as clubs and activities to participate in. Also what kind of physical training should I do to be better prepared?

Exactly what I want to know…

ok well i have pretty good grades. My unweighted average is a 94 and I attend a preparatory school so the classes are difficult. Next year I am in all honors, high-honors and AP classes and I play varsity lacrosse this year. So I was just wondering if there was anything else I should do that can really increase my chances?

i.e. like higher grades? and/or more sports?

What does a 94 equal on a 4.0 scale?

And I think they look for students who are exceptional/great at one or two sports, not so much average in many, so work hard at lacrosse, and another sport if you choose.

I was told that leadership positions in high school are also really important…in clubs, girl scouts, whatever.

(Would joining girl scouts improve chances anyway, if you got leadership positions?)

And still, I would like to know more on how to improve chances (as I’m sure collegekid would, because I’m CERTAINLY no expert  )

bump

well next year I am starting two of my own clubs at school so could that count for leadership? and as for the average i think it is between a 3.8 and a 4.0 depending on the scale. I also do horseback riding outside of school if that helps at all.

do you know if there are any classes I should focus on or try to take?

SEveral comments, WE have a Firstie son, so i know some , not all.

  1. Sports - check take on leadership in your sport --whatever way that might be
  2. Grades- 94 sounds good, continue to work here
  3. Test scores- defintetly take the PSAT next fall… do well her, and start planning when/how to take sat/act… I would say plan on taking it in january next year for first time, then again as needed
  4. FIND your local MALO/MAAR… this are the ‘field force’ that should help you get in, or at least with the process…
  5. Open File Jr. year
  6. Attend the SLS- good not required
  7. LEADERSHIP —school positons woould be good, student council, club president
As stated above, I see it as depth of expereince not numbers… be a leader on LAx rather than a particpant in three sports for example.

IT IS A MARATHON NOT A SPRINT… work off the ‘boxes’ as you can
good luck

sorry for cross post

what is a cross post? sorry i am pretty new to this

i was typing my 1150 am post when you posted at 1141am … some of what I said in mine was outdated by your comments at 1141am…

In general ‘starting’ the clubs is good … two sounds like alot … I think one with devotion would be better … .what are the clubs you are going to start?

well one will be an in school club while the other is after. One is about mythology and the other is about literature and film. Also next year I will be business manager for the debate team as well as debating.

YOu asked for advice, so I will give it to you. dont feel compelled to take it but here goes… what I see is
Good Scholar-grades --check
Athlete (very important)- La Crosse - check … even better can you be a leader on this?
other leadership Debate Club Manager -check ----
Debate check
started literature and filme club-LEadership[ (check)
started mythology club ( this is starting to soudn odd and unfocused … do you really have time to really be good in all these

I think both for admissions and your sanity … you have too much on your plate … combine some or let someone else lead some … Between Debate-mythology-literature … overly heavy on this area

just consider

i think you are definitely right about being unfocused. i didn’t really think of that. I think i won’t do the mythology, it was more of an idea than an actual thing anyway. So i guess i should rewrite everything haha.

Ok next year
English- high honors
Precalculus- honors
Physics- honrs
Art History- AP
US II- Honors
Spanish III- honors

Sports
Lacrosse
I am also going to join winter track to better prep for lacrosse season

Clubs
Debate- business manager
Literature- co-leader
Model UN
Operation Smile
History Society (this meets during school)

maybe this is better presntation … but generally looks good, including model UN… big encouragement on SPORTS and grades… dont forget ACT/SAT … and … see if you can find your malo/maar … what area are you in ?? … or PM if you prefer

what is a malo/maar?

Military Academy Liason Officer / Military Academy Academic Advisor —i believe that technically a "malo’ is a current or retired army officer, whereas a maar is a civilian, in our area the terms are used somewhat interchanegbly …what state are you located in?

new jersey

Hmm… consider mine:
I’m a guy who attends a NYC populated public high school
I’m a junior right now and these are my classes:
AP Psychology
Spanish honors
AP English Language and composition
Precalculus honors
US History honors
Physics
Overall GPA right now? 92~93
1900 SATs

Extra Curricular:
School leaders program
School Honors program (ARISTA)
Varsity Volleyball team (expecting to become co-captain the following year)
I’m president of my church’s youth group, leader of my church’s praise team. I do the technicals such as amplifiers for my church and I also play guitar and drums for my church. And of course, I’m a pastor’s kid.
I got a recommendation from the chairman of the American Evangelical University, which is where my dad delivers lectures at.
I help organize and create activities such as bazaars, events, barbeques, picnics, retreats, camps, missionaries.
I volunteered at Korean Community Service (KCS) for the summer as a Teacher’s assistant.
I also volunteered at a hospital.

Any recommendations, suggestions, and comments would be appreciated!

I would suggest you work on improving your SAT score. Consider taking the ACT.

unfortunately APs are more for seniors than juniors. and im thinking of taking an SAT prep class. my scores were good but not where i want them to be. i show for horseback riding but west point only has a club, think it matters or not so much?

ok i took practice SATs/ACT

SAT: 1840
ACT: 27

is that ok or do i need to increase my scores a lot more?
