the point of this thread is because i was invited to the maximus competition. but im also a semifinalist, and i hope to be a finalist also. the wording on the website says:
Award Criteria Admitted National Merit Finalists who designate Ohio State as their first choice institution by March 1, 2006, and who rank in the top 10% of their graduating classes are given priority consideration for this award.
how likely would i be to get this since its a pretty hefty package,

Award Amount Full in-state tuition plus $4,500 (includes the National Merit Scholarship estimated value: $12,582 for 2005-2006; four-year estimated value is more than $50,300).

im first in my class of 417, 1520 sat, 33 act, live in ohio.
i just dont want to go down to columbus and write an essay if i already have a good chance of getting a full ride.

i don't think that the National Merit Scholarship is quite a full-ride, since room and board and stuff will probably cost more than $4,500. and i think that everyone that is a finalist automatically gets that scholarship.

In order to participate in the 2006 University Scholar Maximus Competition, you must be accepted as an incoming freshman to the Columbus campus of The Ohio State University and be designated a University Scholar for the academic year 20062007.

The link in the previous post should provide you with information on scholarships. A few of the scholarships are for OH residents only and will be identified as such in the scholarship description.

Students wishing to be considered for the University Scholar Maximus Competition or the Morrill Scholars Program must submit all application materials by December 15, 2005.

yea it's a little late to be considered for maximus competition haha.
hopefully i didn't screw up my app and was one of the thousand taken out of the semifinalists...

My D is a National Merit Finalist but only in about the top 20% at a competitive HS. Any opinion on her chances for Distinguished Scholarship at OSU? She has been offered full tuition at John Carroll but would have to pay room & board. Also, she is torn between big school / small school. Any thoughts?

Hey guys,
I'm a writer for The Lantern, the student newspaper at OSU and I would REALLY like to talk to anyone that is involved in the Maximus competition. Please email me here or at my OSU email account taylor.1320@osu.edu asap. We need to get the story out soon and I have yet to find a student in the competiton. Thanks and good luck.

I did the Maximus competition today and there was a National Merit Finalist seminar (or perhaps "chat" would be more accurate) and anyway the woman who spoke was in charge of allocating the Distinguished Scholars awards, and she said that although she did not want to say the word "guarantee", historically all the NM Finalists who designated OSU by March 1, and even several who did so after that date got the sholarship. I don't think you need to worry unless you miss that deadline!

Thanks to all that wrote me, I got a lot of really good information. The article should be in today's edition of The Lantern. Thanks again and good luck to all participants!
