I am an Ohio resident, national merit finalist and in the top 5 of my graduating class but I did not participate in the written scholarship days. Is there still a chance of getting scholarship money? Any replies would be appreciated.

From OSU website...two options for NMFs...Good Luck!

National Merit Scholarship

Award amount
$1,000, or up to $2,000 with financial need ($4,000 to $8,000 four-year value)

Criteria
National Merit Finalists who designate to the National Merit Corporation that Ohio State is their first-choice institution are considered for this award.

Distinguished Scholarship for National Merit, National Achievement,
and National Hispanic Scholars
Award amount
Full in-state tuition; includes the value of the National Merit/Achievement Scholarship

Criteria

National Merit Finalists who rank in the top 10 percent of their graduating classes, and who designate to the National Merit Corporation by March 1, 2009, that Ohio State is their first-choice institution, are given priority consideration for this award.
National Achievement and National Hispanic Finalists who apply for admission by February 2, 2009, are eligible for consideration for this award.
Note:
The amount of any other university-administered merit scholarships awarded to a Distinguished Scholar will be included in the Distinguished Scholarship. However, Maximus Scholars who apply by the December 1 deadline are eligible to compete for the larger Presidential Scholarship (see Maximus Competition).

From what the admissions office told me, it sounds like almost all National Merit Finalists who responded to NMS by March 1 that OSU was their number one choice get the Distinguished Scholarship.

The previous posters are correct about the Distinguished Scholarship for NMFs. It is sure thing if you follow the steps and a great deal (it was even better two years ago when my Son got it). Unfortunately you would have had to designate OSU as your first choice to NMSC by March 1st. I'm afraid you missed the deadline.

dd got Distinguished Scholarship offer via email yesterday! This will supercede the Medalist Scholarship she received so that will now go to another candidate…unfortunately, doesn’t add on to it!

My daugther received a Distinguished Scholarship offer from OSU on Saturday as well! She already accepted a $2,000/year corporate scholarship from National Merit. My impression is that these two scholarships are not ‘stackable’. Does anyone know if that’s true?

When my ds got the Distinguished Scholarship back in 2007 the corporate NMSC scholarship was a part of the OSU “Distinguished” package. They take the NMSC portion and add on a scholarship directly provided by OSU that cumulatively makes up the award.

osu ran out of scholarship money. they cant give any more

Not true…dd received Medalist Scholarship as part of Maximus Competition and her letter stated that “as she was in contention for the Distinguished Scholarship” that if she received that, they would then award the Medalist Scholarship to the next in line.

not true. they over award on purpose as they dont expect everyone to come. they are refusing to give my friend the national buckeye because of transcript problems forcing him to only get accepted last week ( he has a 31 act and is in top 3 or 4%). they claim that they used up all of their funds and currently have no more to award. so if someone does not take a certain award, they will only be able to award someone if that value of their scholarships drops below how much was in their budget.
