Has anyone heard of someone who was given a likely letter [by an Ivy] but didn’t get through ED/REA?
Seems that would only happen if first quarter grades completely plummeted or kid had a serious disciplinary issue after receiving LL and before application decisions were released.
^ I have heard a couple stories. One is that a kid who had received a letter had his offer of admission rescinded because he was busted for possession of marijuana in his high school. Another involved a kid who was caught cheating on an exam after the likely letter was received. But other than that, no. A likely letter is basically a decision on the application. I doubt seriously that the ad coms even look at the applications again between October and whenever SCEA/ED/RD decisions are made.
it also does depend on the sport. Ivies often inform the student in advance if they wont get in.
Sorry to have to disagree with Center, but if you’re asking under what circumstances a recipient of an Ivy LL might not ultimately be admitted, then it has zero to do with the particular sport but rather depends on the same circumstances that would result in a rescission of a formal admissions offer – e.g., precipitous drop in grades, character issue, and the like.
What if an Ivy League has sent likely letters to 3 athletes from my school…do I still have a chance of getting in? (as in, would they accept 4 students from my high school?).
