Likely Letter - Coming Out at March

Does Dartmouth send out "likely letter" to applicants in March? If so, do people ,who receive these letters, like almost 100% sure they will get in in early April?

I think Dartmouth does send out likely letters, how many, I don't know, but I'm sure you can find out. As I've seen you post this on other ivy league forums, I'm not sure if the other ivies have likely letters. But they may. In any case, if you get one, it's a very good sign.

If I recall, likely letters went out last Feb t to the top of the top of the app pool. And, yes, a likely letter is a pre-offer of admission, so 100%.

Dartmouth out approximately 500 likely letters through 3 cycles: the first in late february and 2 cylcles in march.

*The Admissions Office sends these letters to approximately 500 exceptional members of the regular-decision applicant pool that the office has decided to accept early in the process. The letters tacitly inform them of their acceptance well in advance of the official letter sent in early April on the common Ivy League mailing date.

"There is no question that when we mail our final decisions in April, you will be offered admission to the College," Furstenberg wrote in a past March letter.

The likely letters have been sent out for a number of years and serve a variety of purposes to benefit both the College and the applicants, Dean of Admissions Karl Furstenberg said.

"These letters go to truly outstanding applicants who emerge early in the process as clear admits," Furstenberg said, but students not receiving likely letters are not necessarily less likely to be admitted.

According to Furstenberg, informing students of their acceptance early allows them more time to learn about Dartmouth and helps push the College to the front of the minds of the particularly talented applicants that receive the letters.*

They are sent on a rolling basis (so if some one should post that they got one and you have't heard anything, don't panic) because there will still be about 11-1200 letters going out RD.

It says that they want to releive some of the stress of the admission process by informing you that you are very likely to be admitted in to the class of 2010.

Ours said:

Dated March 11, 2004

Dartmouth College extends its warmest greetings nd hearty confratulations for your outstanding academic achievements. As we in the Admissions Office continue to evaluate the appliecations we have received for the Calss of 2008, a small and selct group of well-qualified students emerges. We take great pleasure in informing you that youare part of this talented group and that you consider the possibility of continuing your education at Dartmouth College.

Our review process is not yet entirely complete, but we did want you to know that your admission to Dartmouth is very likely. We beleive that you would make a substantial contribution to the Dartmouth community, and that the unique opportunites offered by Dartmouth provide unparralleled access to greater knowledge. We encourage you to learn more about dartmouth, its faculty, facilities and student body. In order to help you discover more about Dartmouth, a select group of students will be invited to attend "dimensions of Dartmouth."
It is our hope that this lette will give you additional time to make an informed decision concerning your college plans. Oncew again, contratualtions and we will be in contact with you in April.

Sincerely,

Karl M. Furstenberg
Dean of Admissions
and Financial Aid

NOTE: Not every student who gets a likely letter will get an invitation to dimensions. This year Dimensions will probably be held between April 20 and April 22.

While ED and some RD candidates are not invited to Dimensions, it does not mean that you are not welcome to attend or participate (you just have to make your own arrangements-getting a friend at Dartmouth to host you and paying your own way to Hanover).

P.S. they even send a letter to the parents stating

We are pleased to share some encouraging words with you about recent developments here at Dartmouth. Although official decisions will not be mailed until April 1, we contact students whose applications look especially promising in advance of the April mailing date in order to alleviate some of the stresses of waiting.

I received a likely letter, if I remember correctly, around late February/early March of last year. If this year is similar to last, two forms of the letter are sent out, one of which invites you to Dimensions. I seem to recall that my letter said there was "no question" I would be admitted to the college come April.

I could be wrong, but I've heard that most of the likely letters were sent out to olympic-level athletes and 1500+ (old) SAT scorers. Take that how you will...

500!!!!!

That means that likely letters + ED decisions pretty much make up like 90% of dartmouth's freshman class.

holy s***

dont forget they accept like 2 times the amount of kids that fill the class

oh yea duh.

but still, thats like the entire class.

you could probably say 50% of accepted students are either ED acceptees or receive likely letters. remember though, there's a lot of overlap, because alot of the likelies go out to athletes, who get in early.

well considering dartmouth had i believe 400 ed acceptances? and 500 likelies...thats crazy. obviously not all of those 500 will go but still.

i think a lot of the "academic likelies" are also courted by harvard, yale, etc., that's probably one of the reasons they get the letters from dmouth in the first place. anyone know yield of likely letter recipients?

Dartmouth sends approx 1700 RD admission letters in April to yeild a class of approximately 1075 students.

400 -ED acceptances (students committed to attend)
500 Likely letters (they will also receive an official letter in april)

total 900

another 1200 acceptance letters going out during regular RD

500 is a large number!

Yeah I got mine in early March I think, and it pretty much told me that the administration wanted to make the process "less stressful" or something, and that my acceptance was virtually guaranteed.

Get a likely = your in
