Hey guys!
I was just curious, when does Dartmouth usually send out likely letters?
D’s [class of 2013] was 2/11/2009. I think was pretty typical – give or take a few days.
I’ve heard Dartmouth sends them out in waves? Not sure of the credibility of that statement.
Thank you for your response though! I know I shouldn’t be waiting for a likely, there’s really little hope, but I guess it’s nice to know.
Likely letters are sent out in waves through out the month of february and march
Do we know how many admitted students are sent likely letters? And they should come out now until decision day?
There’s no set number, and, as Sybbie said, they come in waves. I think they end a week or two ( or maybe three) before the regular decision day.
Historically they’ve come as early as late January, but generally will be set up till mid-March
hello! has anyone here gotten a likely letter for 2019 yet??!!
I do not recommend worrying about whether/when/if likely letters have gone out.
Can someone explain what these likely letters are? o.O
My son got one when he applied last year. It is dated February 14. He didn’t end up going to Dartmouth, but I have to say it was kind of a relief to hear from a college early on. Also, knowing early that we would be traveling to the east coast over his spring break (he had not visited Dartmouth before) helped a great deal in making plane reservations early since his spring break was the first week of May.

Any updates on Likelies? Have the first wave gone out? I know I’m being impatient and there’s practically no chance I will be able to find out before the Ivy’s come out with decisions. Is it March 31st or the 27th or some other day this year? I’ve heard that it’s always the last Thursday of March, which would be the 26th this year.
^March 31st.
Haven’t seen or heard anything about Dartmouth likelies, but Penn sent them to 200 people on Thursday. (Not including me).
The majority of accepted students don’t get likelies. It has never been obvious to me what the criteria are. Every year it seems as if kids here who get them are in general no more outstanding than kids who don’t. Maybe it is affected by when in the process they review your app? More enthusiasm for candidates earlier in the process? Maybe it is a question of the kid having some characteristic they are looking for? Who knows.
I have heard that some of the non-athletic programs get a spot or two – if a kid is otherwise qualified and the program really wants a singer/actor/artist/debater. Heck, maybe even the rugby team, which is in a different position than the NCAA sports. I have no idea if this is true, but it doesn’t seem improbable or unreasonable. So. yes, I think Consolation’s “Maybe it is a question of the kid having some characteristic they are looking for?” could be part of it.
As others have stated the majority of the RD class will not receive likely letters. IIRC, they send out ~ 500 letters (remember they admit approx 2100 students). As a parent whose child did receive a likely letter in the early round, it did take some of the pressure off. I don’t think it is a matter of when you apply; I have known students who applied early in the cycle get them and from out experience, D submitted her application on the last day it was due, and got a likely.
However, I have spent many years on this forum watching all of the angst that occurs as to whether or not a student does get one (personally, I wish that they would just do away with the process). I do think that they use the process to fill niches to round out the class.
I have an acquaintance who recently stated he was accepted to Dartmouth. Does anyone else have any news of likelies?
