what qualifies getting an academic likely letter? like what on earth do you have to do or have done?

I got a likely letter from Princeton, Harvard, AND Yale when I was in second grade.

:)

i dont know really, like look at my stats, they arent too impressive right?
I mean I did a couple of things that I didnt mention on CC, like national conventions and stuff but I doubt that qualifies....
I sent a request to Yale to see if mine was truly a likely letter

I'd kind of like everyone to cut down on the sarcasm......

st. aegis, the first line of last year's likely letter read:

"It gives me great pleasure to tell you that we have completed a preliminary review of your application and are awarding it a “likely” rating."

Hope this helps differentiate it from other mailings encouraging your application.

I think we started out a bit sarcastic because it's sometimes hard for us to distinguish posts like ChandlerBing's ;) from legit ones.

I'm ask it again:

what qualifies getting an academic likely letter? like what on earth do you have to do or have done? what differentiates one student from another?

There's no exact metric, Mr. F. The most that can be said is that at schools like HYP, academic likelies go to students with truly distinctive, highly unusual credentials --- something well beyond mere academic superstardom. I reiterate, academic likelies are very rare, and in past years they have surfaced only during the regular decision cycle, not now. (Athletic likelies, while also rare, do come out in the early round.) And not receiving a likely does not mean you're not going to get in!

when i stayed overnight at yale, my host said she got a likely call and then a letter. she applied RD and got the call superbowl weekend, so that's around feb. she wasn't an athlete, but a singer. she had never heard of them and thought it was a joke. the admissions officer who called her told her that they usually send them to athletes and people strong in music.

Is it possible to email a coach and ask him for a likely letter (although he will most def. say no)? Or do you just wait after you send in your app?

A parent of a recruited athlete can answer the question better than I, but if you're of the quality to be in the running for an athletic likely, I assume you'd already be in pretty heavy contact with the coach and the topic might already have been broached. If the issue hasn't come up yet, it's probably fair to ask if you're a possibility for a likely. That will let you know where you stand with the coach.

^^AA is correct. Walton, if you are truly interested in being on a team at Yale, send an email with your academic and athletic profile to the coach, or fill out the recruiting questionaire available on line for each sport. If the coach doesn't get back to you within a few days, send a follow-up email and ask if it might be possible to talk on the phone about how you might fit on the team. The coach will be able to tell pretty quickly if you are a candidate. The likely is a way for a player and a coach to communicate to each other "you are my first choice" with the blessing of admissions. Cold calling a coach who doesn't already have a profile for you is a bad idea.

I did talk to the track coach in the summer via meeting in his office and he said something to the effect of: if Yale is your 1st choice, let me know and I'll see what I can do. I was not the best athlete in the niche but I had the academics and other ECs. I plan on contacting the coach later. When do you think is the latest date I can contact coaches?

^^Walton, I can only assume you're a junior in high school, because if you're a senior, there is no later. You should have been in contact with the coach throughout the summer and up to and including the EA deadline. Has the track team had their recruiting trips yet? I think you're behind with your timelines.

In this thread, WJB and AA have been dead-on with their comments.

now that we've met one another
it's clear we deserve each other
you're perfect
you're perfect
so we're perfect together
born to be forever- dancing through life!

Walton12, I pm'd you.

St. Aegis has not returned...I'm thinking he got a letter that said, "Please consider applying to Yale."

If St. Aegis seems deceitful, just don't give him/her credits! It's as simple as that. No need to argue over intangible BS :)

jesslovesjuice, how could that student have gotten a likely if she hadnt have heard of yale?

Maybe he got a promotional brochure about Yale and thought that it was a personally addressed invitation to him?

first; of all, me male
second; yale is my second choice- yes I know what it is
third:no it definitely wasnt promotional
fourth: still waiting a response from admissions
hope that clears....

I believe you St. Aegis.
Congrats.
I think all of us wish we were in your shoes.
Don't listen to all the snarky comments - if you got a likely that's awesome and you don't need neurotic ccers to believe you.
