A friend of mine(who is more addicted to CC than me,lol!) says he’s noticed that majority of the ‘likely letters’ at CC(for all the big schools, not only Penn) going to URMs. Anyone else agree or notice if that’s true?

i’m chinese… no way… but that’s just me

@collegetips

the majority of likely letters go out to athletic recruits and URMs. However, many people who aren’t athletes or URMs get likely letters as well. If I had to guess, I would say of all the Ivy League likely letter recipients, 3/4 were athletes or URMs and 1/4 were neither athletes nor URMs. That’s my own estimate, though.

LOL same as …ehz! asian - definitely in no way underrepresented :p

^goldtortoise… I excluded the athletic recruits altogether,my question was only for the ‘academic’ likelies. I get the impression that this year the number of academic likely letters are much more than previous years. Is that an established fact?Or is it because of not having received one myself,it feels like there are thousands out there who have gotten them, haha!

It is a fact that the number of likely letters sent out by Penn increased this year, so there were probably more academic likelies than in the past.

Yeah,Penn has openly stated that the # of likelies increased this year, but looks like the same goes for the other big schools too(even though they may not have publicly said so yet).I was trying to gauge the overall scenario.I know,I know…overanalyzing maybe, CC style,eh?

It seems that the unveiling of the new MKSE major in SEAS has resulted in a considerable amount of likelies sent to students who applied into that major. It is a smart move, tactically, to try and ensure the success of the new program.

Hey everyone!! I got one for SEAS last week or so, and I’m super excited and hopeful! Congrats to all of us…is anyone planning on attending Preview Day on the 14th? I think that’s how it might work out for me…it would be cool to know some people before getting there!

I’m soooo jealous :> Anyone applied to the dual-degree program got a LL?

@Nanmander yup! i’m going to the overnight preview day thingy. looks interesting/informative.
then heading to FL for spring break! :D

Nanmander - you got likely letters from Columbia, Dartmouth, Amherst and Penn?

CYou: I’m so excited! The sister of a close friend goes there now, and she has a single, so I think if things work out I’ll probs stay overnight with her. If not, I’ll just camp out on the Quad. Jaykay

Hope: I got likelies from Penn, Dartmouth, and Columbia. Amherst invited me for their Diversity Weekend program (well, you apply for a spot and then they select people to go–it’s an awesome experience btw), which I attended, but no likely/early write from them.

hey Nanmander: since you’re going to the Scholar’s Preview, are you still going to a Penn Preview day then?
cause if was wondering, if i’m already going to the scholar’s preview thing april 12-14, is it still worth it to go to a preview day? does anybody know what the differences are between the two? i would assume its not necessary to go to both…

Okay so as far as I can tell, the Scholar’s Preview is specifically for minority students and it’s a two/three day event. Preview days are for everyone and last a day (9:00-5:00 I think). The Scholar’s thing overlaps with some of the Preview Days so I’m guessing there will be some mingling. You get invited to Scholar’s if you are a URM, but anyone is allowed to go if they request an invite. I believe I will be attending a Preview Day, but I still want to stay overnight if possible. I don’t think they’ll mind…but I don’t know yet. All of this is so expensive–I was getting all excited about visiting but now plane ticket prices are putting a bit of a damper on my mood. Oh well, we’ll see how stuff works out! I’m still waiting for the official letters, because until then…it’s not…official? Idk, that’s just how my mind works I guess.

If I’m wrong on any of this, please don’t hesitate to correct me.

I’m a urm and I didn’t get a likely… is that a bad thing? Am I a Penn reject? :(

@ Nanmender -And MIT? The good news is that you can’t attend them all, which means they have to open up for the rest of us. Congratulations - good luck!

I didnt get a likely either, hopefully it’s not a bad sign I’m dying to wait for the decision

oh alright. i think there is a preview day on the 14th, but i cant do it cause i have to be heading back to school that day, since our music department is heading down to disney world for spring break
whatever, its probably not that big a deal to not attend a penn preview if i go to the scholars preview, right?

@Hope: Lol okay. Seriously, I just feel extremely blessed and lucky and bewildered that all these schools like me, and I am so grateful for it. There are so many amazing candidates out there, and we all deserve a chance. We really, really do. Where do you want to go?

@CYou: Aw, that’s sad But…I have to say Orlando sounds pretty sweet. And I think it’s totally fine to do Scholars or Preview! It all depends on what you can do, really.
