Likely Letter

I have those stats AND I’m URM and I still didn’t get a likely letter…but it’s foolish to expect one in the first place, so I’m not disappointed.

In response to WestsideWorry, my son got a likely in the first wave. It doesn’t say anything about “likely acceptance.” It is much more direct - “THERE IS NO QUESTION THAT WHEN WE MAKE OUR FINAL DECISIONS AT THE END OF MARCH, YOU WILL BE OFFERED ADMISSION TO THE COLLEGE.” My understanding is it is a way to work within the confines of the Ivy League agreement (see below) and also get the student excited about Dartmouth earlier in the process. The student will start to see themselves as a Dartmouth student, or Cornellian, etc…

from the dartmouth website:
Admissions Offices at each Ivy school may offer some athletic and other candidates a “likely” letter, which has the effect of a formal letter of admission provided the candidate continues to have a satisfactory secondary school experience. Coaches may initiate the requests for these letters, but only the office of admission can issue a"likely" letter.
Admissions decisions will be communicated only by official written notification from Admissions Offices, by notification in Early Action, Early Decision or “regular” processes, or by “likely letters” after October 1, which are confirmed by one of those notifications. No other indication of a possible positive admissions result is or should be considered reliable.

“A rank of “1” that is maintained will result in Valedictorian.” Not at Canadian high schools. Students who want to become Valedictorian must apply and have an interview. About 3 students are chosen. Then the graduating class votes and whoever has the most votes becomes Valedictorian! The Valedictorians at my school aren’t usually ranked number 1, although most of them are up there (within top 10%). They ALL have good personalities and are involved in many aspects of the school.

qwerty2001 and basajaun- I really dont think that it is the most qualified students who get likely letters. I just think its the first ones to be accepted. I got a likely letter and I have a 3.67 and a 2040 on my SAT.

Westside Worrier- The letter says “There is no question that when we make our final decisions at the end of March, you will be offered admission to the College”. and some other stuff. But thats the most important sentence. And I live in Miami, Florida.

Do international students receive likely letters?

Maybe I should stay off CC for a bit, seeing all of this made my stomach twitch uneasily. :stuck_out_tongue:
Nah, I’m just kidding. Congrats to all you guys who got likelies! :D

Guezmike-Can you please let us know if you are URM? Thanks so much.
Very nervous with a 2060 SAT and 33 ACT. 1/305 in class rank but think test scores are too low w/o a hook for most places I applied…
Seems to be SO many people with 2300+ numbers.

D has a 2300 SAT, a 3.9 GPA and no “likely letter.” We live in California.

Thanks. Great screen name!

@Westside Worrier: Don’t worry yet! The vast majority of accepted applicants do not ever receive likely letters. :)

Westside Worrier-Did your daughter get a Dartmouth interview? Thanks.

@JustASenior, I’m wondering the same thing-do internationals receive likelies? Because I’m international and I haven’t gotten anything yet.

Daughter did not have interview. Also, her weighted GPA is 4.5.

@JustASenior and RainbowSprinkles: From what I’ve heard, there’s no reason international applicants can’t receive likely letters, but it’s very, very rare.

dts1dlm- Im not sure what a URM is but I think it has to do with ethnicity. So I am hispanic. Cuban to be specific. My parents immigrated here. and um, in case it also has to do with economic background, my parents make far less than Dartmouth’s yearly tuition.

Thanks. My weighted is also a 4.5, but my SAT score is lower. I haven’t interviewed, either.

Thanks, Mike. Yes, URM is under represented minority and I would guess Cuban would be that. Congrats and thanks for your quick response.

Thanks firelioness!

Is the third wave out yet?

There was a video chat a couple of days ago, supposedly for everyone who received likely’s. Is it confirmed that there’s going to be a third wave?

There was last year. I know someone who got a letter like a week before April 1.
