Likely Letter

Tbh, interviews are negligible, unless they either went very well or went poorly; the vast majorities of interviews go well.

Probably after; the midyear transcript apparently had a negligible weight.

It’s not about “going well”, it’s about adding content to your application. I know I felt like there were certain things I couldn’t fit into my application that I was hoping to tell them in person…

My son received his likely letter on January 31st and his first semester grades have not been sent by Guidance counselor yet. Clearly, Dartmouth will accept candidates without those grades.

As I mentioned in a previous post, he sent his application in mid-November. I don’t think it is a coincidence that he was in the first round of likelies. HIs app was read early in the process and put in the stack for a likely. I am sure there are top candidates that don’t get a likely because their app is read later in the process and they figure they will just send them an acceptance letter on march 31st… With record applications to get through and 10 additional new readers hired, I think they are wading through a sea of apps. If you don’t get a likely, it doesn’t mean you won’t get a positive result at the end of March.

All the LL recipients should start a thread with their stats!

I agree with Magnum. As the great majority of admits do not get likely letters it is best not to expect one and to remain as calm as possible. Those who get them are fortunate and can relax. These letters are for “hooked” candidates and superstars who will obtain multiple admits. The other mortals will need to wait patiently.Good luck to all.

Received one today and was pretty surprised. Thought I had forgotten to send something in :)

must be the second wave

Yup, I knew beforehand because I could access the Class of 2015 directory but it was nice to come home to this letter today. It was dated Feb. 11.

By academic superstars… are people on CC referring to Valedictorians w/ 2300+ (and good ECs, etc)? Or do you not have to be that good to recieve one?

I’m not understanding this Valedictorian thing. Our school doesn’t decide/vote on who gets to be Valedictorian until May. Why are so many CCers Valedictorians-how do they know already?

Pretty much,IV.These students have academic or other qualities that create a sort of “bidding war” between top schools…And Rainbow, most classes are ranked by now.A rank of “1” that is maintained will result in Valedictorian.

Most likely referring to status going into senior year. at least one university I know of grants Valedictory scholarships based on end of jr. year or end of senior.

Many schools do valedictorians differently - I’ve read on CC of Canadian schools that pick through a process of “application” by Seniors with an interview and an application and all, and then the teachers/administration chooses one.
For the majority of the U.S., and colloquialism on CC, valedictorian usually refers to the individual with a class rank of 1 (but then again, not all schools necessarily rank, whether just not releasing ranks to students and parents, or not ranking at all all).

My school does Val by class rank. We pretty much know by end of first semester who it will be. The school makes it official after 3rd quarter grades. A couple of years ago the Sal actually beat the Val when second semester grades came out!

I know this has already been asked, but no one’s actually answered this question - do international applicants get likely letters?

Do international applicants even get interviews?

I am an international and got an interview last weekend. I have no idea if they get likely letters. Certainly I havent got anything lol.

Hi, paukid.

Where are you from?

So I just got a likely letter so I read through this thread and wanted to post some info about me to see if it helps anyone.

I sent my dartmouth app the night before it was due. My likely letter was dated February 11th and I got it yesterday in the mail. Um, Im not valevictorian, nor do I have a 2300+ I actually have a 2030 (640 reading, 780 math, 610 reading). I also didnt even expect this letter, it was so random. I just applied to Dartmouth cuz the app was easy and I had an extra fee waiver.

I really hope that you all have good experiences with the whole college acceptance stuff. Dont stress it too much. Everything will work itself out one way or another. And if you believe in the fact that you can succeed, then you will succeed no matter where you go  GOod luck.

GuezMike - What city are you in? Also - would you mind revealing how the letter described the “likely?” Thank you!

i know 2 people that got likely letters so far. both close to 4.0 gpa and 2300+. Unless your hooked, I wouldn’t really hold your breath waiting for a likely letter without those sorts of stats.
