Hey guys, I just got a letter from Bates today from a professor at Bates that said the following; “I have spent this year working as the Faculty Associate in Admissions, interviewing students, visiting high schools, and most recently, reviewing applications. Your application to become a member of the Class of 2009 at Bates is very impressive and you are likely to receive a formal offer of admission from the Admissions Office in about two weeks.”

Did anyone else get this letter? Does this basically mean I am in?

I got the same letter as you, I think, was yours from the bio department? Mine was, and it invited me to an accepted students weekend, which is April 1st (about the time we're meant to officially hear) so I assume we got in. I'm so excited!

yup, mine was from the bio department too! hooray, that means we are in!!!

I received the same letter. I'm not too happy with the reception being on April 1st, though, since a lot of us are supposed to get notification online from a number of schools that day. I don't want to be sitting in some admitted students event biting my nails over other schools...

Anyway, congrats to those who also got letters! Let us know if you plan to attend the reception.

I got in too...pretty happy about that...congrats to everyone

Anyone know when/if there will be an admitted students overnight? I can't find it on the site. I probably won't be attending the reception mentioned in the letter, but depending on where else I get in, I may want to do an overnight visit.

yeah man i cant attend either...and i really dont know much of anything about this school, i just know its hard to get into and intellectually inclined...i emailed the guy and asked for a contact i can discuss the school with...i didnt plan on getting in because its so selective and my gpa is only about 93.9 unweighted...suddenly i have no clue what to do lol

i'm in the same position as you 70reve4rotag, i don't think i'm gonna go to the reception because i want to see where else i get in first. i'm kinda strapped for time though because i'm missing my entire spring break in mid-april to go to england with one of my classes, so i want to do an overnight as early as possible after i find out where else i get in.

question...bates is only #23 on USNWR but gets crazy reviews in princeton review 351 best...so what shud i go by? what kinda presitge does bates have?

Led, I don't think you should go by rankings at all. Bates isn't about rankings, as you can tell by their optional test score policy. If you want to know that you'll be getting an excellent education if you choose Bates, I can assure you that you will - the faculty is dedicated to the students and the school has top-knotch facilities. The "prestige" shouldn't really matter, unless you're worried about grad schools and/or getting a job after college, in which case you can relax because Bates is generally regarded as an incredible undergraduate school (as evidenced, if you must, by the #23 ranking and raving in PR). Bates has so much to offer that can't be quantified, so rankings don't really do the school justice. If you want to find out if Bates is the right school for you, I would suggest reading more about it, using the contact info the Dean will send you in response to your inquiry to talk to a current student, visiting the campus if possible, and firing all of your questions at the admissions office (because they obviously want you since you got a likely letter).

And just so you know, all of this comes from a prospective student who visited the school but will probably not attend (because it's location doesn't really fit my needs/interests).

rotag, although i agree, ive applied to a lot of schools like bates, and ive frequently analyzed the advantages each one provides, concluding that, many are both equal and uncomparable...sadly this leaves me to use ranking, which suck...i have contacted our professor of biology to try to remedy this, and have asked for a few contacts myself...i do however think the rankings are good for a few things...1 of which is recognition, which is important in the job market...so pardon my confusion...i will agree however, and i assure u, my decision will most likely be a financial one, not one basted on silly rankings

I got a likely letter today too! Whoo! (btw I'm in colorado)

Congrats all!

Congrats to everyone already in. For those of us who haven't gotten anything, though, does anyone know whats going on? Are they sending out all the acceptances before the rejections? Or just all decisions as they come?

well the letter they sent me said i will receive my acceptance in about two weeks and it was dated march 16th. I know Bates says they will mail all decisions by March 31st but I don't know about anything else.

hey congrats to all with likely letters
btw it was yeasterday that i first heard of such a thing
and i think it is quite unfair. they might as well send unlikely letters to say "i am the math professor and i have reviewed your application but you are not the kind of student we are looking for, so please do not experct to get in...":) i mean now you know you're in and i have to agonize another week at least since i am an international
