Likely Letters

How do you plan on making your decision when you know where you’re accepted?

When should an athlete expect to receive a likely letter?

First date they can be’ sent is october 1

Thanks trackpop. Are you familiar with this process? My daughter was offered (verbally) a spot at a Div 3 school after admissions did a “read” if she applied ED. She told the coach that she thought she would apply somewhere else ED even if she doesn’t get support. Now it’s a waiting game to see if she will get offered a likely letter. How much communication should take place? I don’t want her to bother the Div 1 coach but it’s making me crazy.

bsalum: The best place for this question is in the Athletic Recruits forum, under Specialty College Admissions Topics. Lots and lots of experience over there, with Ivy Likely Letters, Div. 1, Div. III, ED/EA! However, if I were you, I would definitely be finding out what the (Brown?) coach’s thoughts are!

There is a delicate dance around the likely letter. At each school we asked the coach if he would support the application. As we neared October we asked for the likely letter. The likely letter comes after the pre read. As my son was not yet decided between two schools, we indicated the speed in offering the letter might be’ a factor. After the offer, it took about two to’ three weeks for the letter to’ arrive.

thanks for the advice! do you have another child applying to college?

Not for a few years

do you think by indicating that the speed in offering of the likely might factor in help speed up the process?

The schools knew my son had competing offers from comparable schools so it may have done so. Would Harvard quake if Cornell is about to offer an LL? Maybe not. Brown, however, may speed things up if it knows Columbia, Penn or Dartmouth is about to offer. Be careful about fabricating offers, though, as coaches may talk.

Thanks again. She wouldn’t ever fabricate anything anyway- she’s had a lot of interest from Div 3 schools- telling her that she’s a #1 recruit, but she’s really holding out for a bigger school. Is it pretty grim if she was told today that she is in the top 10 out of 40 recruits from a Div 1?

Please move this discussion to the proper forum, as suggested above by Mayhew. (I wonder if you can imagine how difficult it is for non-athletes to read things like this? I mean, the possibility of receiving a “likely letter” in early October?)

^^non-athletes shouldn’t feel bad that national and international champion athletes who also are 4.0 and 2300+ students are being offered opportunities to attend HYPS…B, they should know that there are kids out there that can get an A and jump higher!
