Will be useful for us RD applicants!

@nerdoldnerdith – Nice work digging up this thread!! :)

Anyone know if Columbia still sends out likely letters and do other Ivies/top colleges like Dartmouth, UPenn, Northwestern, Cornell also send out likely letters??

It’s just 3 days since RD deadline and I’m already tensed!! Haha!!

In all likelihood you won’t hear anything until at least the end of February (assuming they do send likely letters this year), interview reports aren’t due until Feb 17/18th.

Sorry I can’t tell you anything about whether or not they still send them, way back (in the time of the dinosaurs) when I applied, Columbia didn’t send likely letters.

Schools with rolling admissions (like SUNY’s) may let you know earlier, assuming they still have rolling admissions.

I know Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Cornell, Brown and Harvard send them. IDK of any others.

I know Harvard tends to call people on the phone rather than sending them an email like others do… so idk.

Students on this board have reported getting a likely letter from Columbia as early as late January.

Remember not to hold out for a likely letter. A very small portion of the accepted student body receives a likely letter and it’s hard enough getting in, let alone anticipating a likely letter lol.

^ That’s true. I’m seeing it as another milestone in this 3 month wait for decisions!! :)

@andreaval, Ohh great so 3 out of the 6 colleges I applied to, send out likely letters!! Perfect for me!! :)

Why is it perfect for you? Do you have any idea who receives Likely Letters? Recruited athletes and the BEST OF THE BEST applicants. The vast majority of eventual admittees never see a likely letter.

Are you expecting one because you’re one of the few hundred ultimate applicants this year? Congrats.

Otherwise, you’d be foolish to pine away for a Likely Letter. Very few are sent.

All eight of the Ivies plus many other selective colleges use them.

^ Haha!! I don’t expect a likely letter!! Or rather far from it!!

Its perfect for me cause 3 schools send them out and 3 others (I assumed) don’t. So, when I don’t receive likely letters in early February - I won’t be completely disheartened and can say to myself - there are three other schools!!

And if I get one, then praise the Lord!! :)

Either way, it is PERFECT for me!!

Moreover, it lets reality sink in slowly than hit you in one shot!! That is what I meant. Not any of what you just stated!!

P.S. No offence, you are obviously elder than I am, but still - sometimes even though you are just trying to help out, it comes off as scathing!! And it might sometimes hurt(however good intentioned it might be) !! I realize that all these doubts/misplaced expectations of college applicants can be dismaying - but hey, this is how we learn!! :)

^ Agreed. My apologies. No need for me to have been as terse as I was. Good luck to you

Thank you!!
I really appreciate your honest opinions though!!
My rule - If T26E4 says it, then it should be right!! :)

Has anyone been offered an interview yet? Do you know when those usually occur for Columbia? My sons have had interviews for several other schools but nothing yet from Columbia. When it’s your top choice it makes it very nerve wracking to not hear anything!

Interviews are offered at random. It wouldn’t hurt your sons chances if they don’t receive offers.

Best of luck to your sons!
