Thank you, sybbie, I won't sweat it. In fact, I'm just going to expect rejections from everywhere, and then if I get an acceptance, I'll be extremely happy.
No use pretending about anything, and no use worrying. (Even though I can't not worry... but I'm trying not to).

I very, very highly doubt I'll be receiving a likely letter from Dartmouth, but I'm glad I know of its existence.

trixie: Oh man, I'm sorry, I didn't realize you were a recruited athlete... my apologies for calling you a troll.
Congratulations on your future acceptance to Dartmouth!

Greetings from Dartmouth! The Admissions Office has received your completed
application to Dartmouth, and I am writing to confirm that you are a "likely"
candidate for admission to the College as a Regular Decision applicant. You'll
soon receive a more formal "likely letter" from Dean of Admissions and Financial
Aid Maria Laskaris, but we wanted to be sure that you received word of your
status as soon as possible. Your official admissions decision will arrive when
all Regular Decision letters are mailed in late March. The purpose of this
message is to be clear about your status at Dartmouth as you consider your
college options for next year.

Let me take this opportunity to say how pleased we are that you may choose to
become a Dartmouth student. The members of the Admissions Committee are
impressed by your accomplishments, and we believe that Dartmouth is an excellent
match for your interests.

wait a second..does this mean S will become the next BLUTO?

^ ^ ^ well you can't be sure of that.
he could have been qualified to get in, but getting into dartmouth or any ivy has a bit of a luck factor nowadays.

Jd, if DS wants to revive Bluto his timing is great! The original wild football frat, which was kicked off campus years ago for some Animal House-esque stunts, has just returned. Buddy was a brother as was one of my Blutoesque business partners. Fun, fun!

Hey, a little defensiveness here: Not all Dartmouth frat boys are Bluto!

I mentioned on another thread that I think the reason Dartmouth has this reputation is from "the olden days," when the college was all male. Yes, other schools were all male too, but Harvard had the "coeds" at Radcliffe, Brown had Pembroke, Columbia had Barnard. And Yale's in a city. Dartmouth was a bunch of brilliant young men alone in the woods. What else could they do besides drink?

But women began to be accepted in the early '70s and, according to my DH who was there then, they dramatically altered the tone of the school. The reputation hasn't changed, though.

guys...is that peer recommendation essential inorder to have a complete recommendation? (coz my frends are still on working on it....and well..they arent done yet!)

DNA, I don't know but I'll tell you what I told DS when he was trying to choose between a brilliant but less reliable friend and a totally responsible but not as prolific one. If I was Dartmouth, I'd judge the candidate to have poor judgement if he chose a friend who didn't get the form in by the deadline.

Jd, sounds great but now you have me thinking of all those great cakes at Lou's, I know my DS is there often!

hey guys, i have got several questions about the likely letters
1) does darthmouth send those to americans only? i.e. will international students get likely letters as well?
2) are all those letters sent to recruited athletes only?
3) if i got the letter, then that means i am sure of going to dartmouth already, right?
4) what other schools also send out likely letters?
