Likely to get rejected from Georgia tech, is this any way to improve my chances?

@nervousjunior98, will they make you go in-state because of financial considerations or distance considerations?

mostly distance considerations as they are not comfortable with me studying in a state they are not in. It sounds suffocating but since they will be paying for a good chunk of my education, I must abide. I do not have a problem with staying in state but I do not want to transfer as I am not that socially outgoing and life as a transfer student is often…difficult in social terms. Which is why I need to get into UGA or Tech

sorry i accidentally posted this in the forum for Tech, my bad guys

At this point you don’t really have the luxury of saying I don’t like this or that, especially if you must stay in-state.
If you want to attend Georgia Tech, Agnes Scott is your best bet. (And while it’s all-female, it’s near a lot of universities, including Emory, so you won’t lack dating/socializing opportunities even if dorms are all-female and most students in class are women.)

Actually, whether Emory/Oxford costs $60,000 depends on how much your parents make. RUN THE NPC. Private universities allocate funds depending on family income and/or on merit.
Since your brother is at Kennesaw State, which offers a lot of STEM majors, that would be a nice safety for you beside GAPerimeter.
UGA is super selective too. The only kids who are sure of getting in are the val and sal of your high school class. Everyone else will have to be competitive.

Taking CC classes over the summer would be better than spending all your time on EC’s.

I’d take general college physics 1 or 2 for one summer session (Physics 2211 + lab or Physics 2212+ lab depending on placement) and CSC 2920: Ethical Issues in CS OR CSC 1301: Principles in CS for the other summer session.
Both are first year courses for the Georgia Tech pathway (CS and Engineering) so you’d demonstrate your ability to take hard science classes required for GTech. Obviously you’d have to do well.

Add ONE EC to the classes above and you’re better off than with a bunch of unrelated EC’s.

Hopefully your GC will be able to speak about the bullying and family issues that affected your GPA Fresh/soph year.

I understand that and its true… I am not trying to be demanding or speak down on those colleges as they are lovely universities, I just mean that I really liked tech and UGA, however, UGA is most realistic for me, since i am taking ap physics c next year, college physics would be pointless, however thank you for the help as I will look into taking CSC 1301 and maybe a biology online class through gwinett tech. i have emailed the UGA admissions and asked them whether me taking these courses over the summer would be useful or not. Until then I shall prepare for SAT subject tests and to ace all my AP classes senior year, although I am unsure of how much that would help, its all I can do

One more quick piece of advice in light of what you’ve shared here: don’t apply EA to UGA. Their EA applicants do t do the full essays, and you will be rejected based on your GPA. Apply regular admission, knock your essays out of the park, and you might get in.

Do apply EA to Georgia College; they have a 3/2 Physics/Engineering program with Tech, and I don’t think you’ll have any problem getting into GCSU (they’re a great little school, but less selective than Tech or UGA), plus you have to apply early to be considered for their scholarship competition. You may not need the money, but if you’re able to land a scholarship, it will look better if you choose the 3/2 or decide to outright transfer.

What did you get on your PSAT?

I took the sat and got a 1520 although I did pretty eh on the PSAT because I winged it

Actually, College Physics 1&2 is different from AP Physics C, one is algebra-based physics and one is calculus-based, and both would be useful. If you already took AP Physics 1 you can take Physics 2.

Kennesaw is an up and coming school. Don’t dismiss it, your GPA as it stands isn’t going to cut it for Tech or UGA.

I’m not trying to dismiss kenesaw or Georgia state guys! I think they are also great schools, and I know if I work hard I can get into them, I’m on this thread to ask for advice on how to maximize my chances for a REACH school like tech or UGA, not that I’m going to get into them. Me and my friend have an idea for a potential startup, say we execute or create an app that is it the iOS top 100 for a week, and I increase my sat score to 1550 plus, would this turn admissions heads or do tech adcoms not bother reading essays of individuals with a gpa below 3.5

I was accepted to GT, 33 ACT and 1500 SAT. GPA 4.0/4.41, rank 1. I had bad subject test scores but still got in. Major physics, STEM, female out of state attending public high school where I have been all 4 years. Heavily involved in ECs. It is admirable that your family moved to GT so you could go to school there and be considered in state however please, please, have safety schools. If you don’t have a back up plan what are you going to do if you don’t get into GT? GT is a great school but there are a lot of very good schools in this country! You can be in complete love with a school only to find that love is not reciprocated which I know first hand by being rejected by my top choice at the time, UChicago.

Hey congratulations, you really deserved to get in with those stats

Since you recently applied, are you aware of whether GT factors in senior year when calculating gpa as I am taking seven AP classes next year which I believer would really help my gpa, one of them is ap physics c but given how time consuming it will be I am unsure of whether it will be worth it anrbwhether it would make a change in my admission to tech or uga. Any insight on whether it is worth taking such a challenging course senior year?I am currently doing an internship at a learning center for children and this summer since I am going to India I am in the process of executing a small project where I will acquire or repair old computers and fix them and take them to India and give them to underprivileged children, considering I got a 1520 on one sitting, I am not stupid, although my freshmen grades beg to differ. Would acquiring a 1600 on the sat paired with some cool EC’s this summer help me? I am also trying to get into UGA so I am planning on taking maybe two science courses over the summer through my local community college to prove to colleges that I can handle the workload,

Don’t take 7 AP’s. Most universities want 6-8 TOTAL over your whole HS career. Choose 4 (5 max) senior year. A 1500+ is good. 1550, sure, but for GTech it doesn’t really change all that much. Inventing an app that sells or is downloaded a lot (with clear numbers) could help. Piling up stuff and risking burn out isn’t the way to go.
Target. 4 or 5 AP’s during the year. One or two activities over the summer (including volunteering). One science course over the summer at the CC. All nailed.
You’re not stupid. It’s just the reality of highly selective colleges: 90% kids with a 3.8+ GPA will get denied.

@MYOS1634 thank you so much, you made me feel less stupid for my freshmen grade mistakes as i have been beating myself up about it, i have a friend at harvard who works with a harvard agency and i offered to advertise for them, considering harvard is such a pretigous university if I did some work with them, im hoping this could potentially look good. and you are right, i do not think I will take physics C as it sounds too complicated with less reward, also can i ask your opinion, so my local cc is 30 minutes away and the only “science” (technically a social science available is a social science- phychology/ or sociology but I doubt either of thesewould be considered rigirous enough to make much of a change in my gpa/admission to uga/tech prospects, what do you think?

^ i meant to say only sciece avaiable online is, instead of ap physics maybe i could take ap biology next year?

The math ACT or SAT score is the most important aspect, for gaining admission to GT, I would say. You need to study hard for the math ACT and SAT and take the Math 2 SAT subject exam and score as close to 800 as you can. All these activities you mention, are not really going to help. Studying hard for math exams will help you get into Georgia Tech.
and apply by the Oct 15 deadline to show interest in Tech.

@nervousjunior98. Internships will not help a weak science background, although you seem to have AP physics, so thats not weak! Study for the Physics AP exam and ace it. You need to study more and worry a lot less. U of Georgia is fine too. Don’t sweat it, but study a lot more! Also take chemistry and biology your senior year. You must have a very strong senior year, and load up on classes and ace them all. Studying will get you into GT. Take summer math and science classes to shore up your knowledge. Activities do not prepare you for Georgia Tech, studying does.

dude, thats the best advice ive gotten on this site considering youre the only person who didnt flat out say i have no chance, alright so I took honor bio frehsmen year and got a 75, 85 in chemsitry last year, and 95 in regular phyics this year, my schedule for next year is already full, does this sound rigorous enough? ap calc ab, ap environmental, ap macro/micro, ap lit and ap physics, however would it look better if I took ap biology and ap physics instead of ap environmental and ap physics? my friends tell me not to as they say im already screwed with no chance of admission and a strong senior year cannot negate that considering only probably 5 percent of tech kids have a gpa that low when admitted, and im presuming they are all seniors? also i was thinking of taking phychology at my local college as that classifies as a social science for UGA but i am not sure how rigorous it would be considered
